8 GB memory on Dell m1730

Thread Starter
Hi, all

I was wondering if anyone had tried putting those G-Skill 4GB memory chips onto a Dell m1730 laptop, and if so, did they notice any major performance gains in doing so.

I use a few simulators at home, especially a Cisco sim called Dynamips which is both a CPU and memory hog, and I also use VMWARE a bit, so I thought I'd see if it's worth the upgrade to 8 GBs of RAM.

Any comments on stability, usefulness, experiences in Vista, etc. getting the system to recognize the full 8 GBs of RAM, etc. would be appreciated

Thanks!

I thought there was a 4GB limit on 32-bit chipsets?
the M1730 has the new chipset that can address above the 4 Gb limit of the old chipset.

Believe it can address upto 32 Gb

The M1710, E1705/9400 etc were limited to 4 GB

Make sure you've got a 64-bit operating system too. I'm sure you already knew that, but I didn't see it mentioned anywhere.

- no Pagefile
- copy benchmark to RAMDisk (300Points+)
- copy Games to RAMDisk (Rome Total War)great Performance
- Company of Heroes max Settings Ultra Textures = 4GB usage = 120FPS

- adress more than 2GB for 32bit Application with CFF_Explorer

Speaking about m1730 memory, what are the recommended sticks to put ?
DDR-800 or DDR-677 (if the cpu is 800MHz) ?
I mean, if i put DDR-800, will it improve performance ?

The 800MHz FSB provides 6.4GB/s of bandwidth between the northbridge and the CPU itself. The dual channel DDR2-667 memory controller provides a theoretical 10.67GB/s of memory bandwidth, which is, for almost all all intents and purposes, enough to saturate the CPU’s processing capability.

Interesting read, thanks a lot!
So i conclude that i can safely install 677 memory and be happy.
The thing to watch tough is the memory timings i guess.

I don't think the m1730 can run memory at 800MHz even though that's what the front side bus is at. 800MHz memory will still run, but it will be at 667MHz instead of 800MHz.

So what is the recommended brand to buy ?
i am seeing lots of people talking about g.skull.
what's the exact model ? does anybody know ?
and why is it that this specific brand is recommended ?

I can't recommend g.skill, I bought laptop and desktop memory from them (4 sticks total) and memtest found errors in all 4. I sent it back for some OCZ which tested fine. Other people have had success with it, maybe it was just ridiculously unlucky. Corsair, Kingston, OCZ, Transcend are all good brands generally.

Is a 64-bit OS a requirement to use 8GB RAM in an XPS1730? Can 32-bit XP do it?
no, you need a 64 Bit OS to address anything over 4 GB

Does anyone know why this is the case.... it was the same case for the m1530... but recently they started offerig 800mhz memory for the m1530..
perhaps there is a way to stil do it? Any input would appreicated.

Thanks.

They use 667MHz memory because that's the way Intel designed the motherboard. I don't know why Intel opted for 667MHz memory instead of 800MHz.

The 800MHz memory for the m1530 could be a typo or just a way to jack the price up; as far as I know the laptop will still run it at 667MHz. I don't think there's a huge difference between 667MHz and 800MHz, so I wouldn't stress out about it.
