Hi! a question about D901C graphics upgrade?

Hello, I am new here although this forum did help me a lot in the past so i decided to join

I have a question about unreadability of the clevo D901C notebook.

if i purchase this notebook with an 8800gtx or at least a 7950gtx, will i be able to upgrade it to a 9800GTX? or will i need a motherboard replacement for that?

and what are some things about upgrades that i should know about this laptop.

I appreciate the help, Thanks!

I have the D901C (Sager NP9262) and it's got the 9800M GT while the 9800M GTX is available now. I'd just check to see if the motherboard revision is the same as the current model and email Sager to see if a BIOS update is available or needed.

If you're thinking about buying an older notebook and upgrading the graphics card keep in mind they will probably charge you around $750-$1000 for the upgrade so it may be advantageous to simply buy the new computer. Also keep in mind the 8800m GTX is a very powerful graphics card and the 9800m GTX will only give you about 10-15 percent more performance.

The reason i want a 9800gtx is because they come in 1 gb of ram, thought it would be sick to have 2 gb of video memory.

i emailed Clevo the other day but the never replied,

ill try sager then

Or try one of the vendors that sells Sager notebooks. You are going to pay through the nose for two 9800M GTX cards.

Keep in mind that video memory is not effectively doubled in SLI. Two 1GB cards in SLI means 1GB effective video memory. You won't get the same performance as if it were 2GB. Still, 1GB is more than enough for a 1920x1200 screen.

i guess i should stick to an 8800 gtx

is it possible to run a 512mb 9800 and a 1 gb 9800 in SLI?

No it's not possilbe.

BTW the 8800m GTX is exactly the same card as the 9800M GT. It's a G92 core running at exactly the same speeds with the same system memory. You probably can't SLI them either though because they have different BIOS that allow some new features in the 9800M GT. It may be possible to flash the BIOS but I wouldn't recommend it and I don't know if anyone has ever tried this or how to even do it.

Also, the 9800M GTX is also a G92 core running at the same speed but it has a greater number of shader processors and double the memory allowing it to perform better in shader intensive games and at higher resolutions.

Your 8800M GTX is within 10 to 15% of the performance of the 9800M GTX and in older games or at lower resolutions will run about the same.
