HP Pavilion dv8000 suddenly shuts down

As the title says, my Pavilion dv8000 has been suddenly shutting down for a while now. It varies when it does it, sometimes it does it at night when the lid is closed, sometimes while I'm playing a game, and other times when its just sitting there being used a minimal amount.

A few months ago I used compressed air to clear out the vents which weren't that blocked anyways, and I still have this problem. The vents are never blocked in any way and I use a cooling pad that draws external power so that it doesn't strain the laptop even more.

I also moved my desk closer to the window recently so that my laptop would be receiving cold air(there is a fan in the window) but I still have this problem.

I also downloaded a program to check the temperatures of the laptop. I don;t know which one and I don't remember the exact temps because I'm not currently on my dv8000. I do remember that the CPU was running around 90C, which I am pretty sure is way too hot, when I was only using firefox to check my email.

I've searched everywhere online and I found a lot of people with the same problem and most of them have said that they fixed it by opening up the laptop and cleaning off the heatsink and cleaning out the fan and vents and replacing the thermal paste.

Today I started opening up the laptop and I was able to see the heatsink after taking off a panel and it is not at all dusty. So I took a shirt and covered the vent with it and blew hard through the shirt so that the shirt would catch any spit and absolutely no dust came out the outtake vent.

This leads me to believe that this isn't the problem.

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts of what could be going on?

I'm sorry for this post being so long. I tried to get all the details in at once.

Thanks a lot for any help.

even if your heat sink/vents are clean you can get high temps if the contact between the heat sink and CPU isn't good. That's what thermal paste is intended to do. If you're comfortable doing it, you could remove the heat sink, clean the old paste off of the CPU and heat sink with rubbing alcohol and a clean (CLEAN) rag, then reapply some Arctic Silver 5 according to the directions. Please be aware that if you have warranty remaining, doing this will void your warranty.

if you have warranty remaining you might want to consider contacting HP instead.

Good luck, and let us know how it comes out.

thanks,
my warranty is out so I could do it myself, but the process just to take out the heatsink is so long and complicated, I don't want to risk breaking anything. I will probably take laptop to the tech department at my university today with the Arctic 5 syringe I bought and ask them to do it.
I'll let you know how it goes.

With the dv5000 and dv8000, which share similar motherboards, have issues with over heating of the memory modules.

The designer of the board put this "cage" around the ram sockets with a cover on the top of it to keep the ram sockets enclosed.

The heat the memory produces, and the fact that the heat sink is right next to this cage; causes the memory to over heat and go bad. I have seen this dozens of times on these models.
