Mental masturbation

My eyes are bleeding from reading too many threads. I'm a first time laptop buyer and would like to keep the price below $3000. I don't plan on buying another one for about 3 years and will be using it mainly for games and dvd watching on the road (Air Force pilot). A lot of information out there suggest I should use a 64-bit machine for gaming, however I'm not to impressed with the machines I've seen from various venders (Hypersonic, Ibuypower, Cyberpower, Voodoo $$$, etc). I really like Sager and Alienware.

Will it be worth it to wait a few months for a good 64-bit machine or should I just stop the maddness and buy now?

Opinions appreciated. Thanks

Like I say to all people, if you don't need it right now, wait a few months for when the crop of new technologies become mainstream. If you do need right now, just buy it and have fun.

Now, you just have to figure out what NEED really is.

64 bit gameing will be nice but noone would make games which wouldent also run on 32 bit systems. That would just be shooting yourself in the foot marketwise. If you but a nice system now it will play anything you throw at it (maybe not at highest settings) for the next couple years just because people make games to sell to as many people as possible and that makes it so old hardware can support it. My four year old athalon 700 with a geforce 1 is only just begenning to get to the point where it can not run things.

Yep -- 64-bit for desktops and notebooks, at this point, is a novelty. It won't get you any real performance gains, and by the time we *do* see 32-bit die on the desktop (if it ever happens), you'll be ready for a new laptop.

The 64-bit AMD processors are fast, and that's the only reason I'd consider them. Whether or not they run 64-bit means pretty much zip on a notebook.

Yeah 64 bit are the hit of the year and it will take some time to spread as amd prices for high end processors are expensive (people do not want the old amd cpu only the new ones, including me!). But one thing is that 64 bit takes much electricity that other components are not put because of that , like amd cpu but without subwoofer, high end video card ...etc.It is now in market to see how much people buy it and who knows what happens in the futur to that company (hope it growss larger and extend near my house, }

I am for a 64 bit cpu but not this year. If u want to buy a laptop i say u should wait a couple of months especially because sager will use SXGA+ 17" with the other stuff ! so i am waiting to get what is going to serve for long life changes.

Also i don't when exactly Sager will be using SATA (serial ATA) in their laptops im sure looking forward to that !

i'd like any body to explain to me if this 8970 v can be compatible to work as tv tuner in egypt or greece or no.

Do you have a NTSC connection? Or a PAL connection? Or what?

finction,

I don't believe that there are any published specs on the Aver-media tuner that is used within the 8790 published. There were extensive specs published for the tuner in the 8890.

dimitris, you have a PM.

And Mundis, I know where you're coming from w/ the eye-bleeding business Bewildering after awhile

If you're in the market for a notebook, I'd say buy one now. If you don't *need* it now, then you can wait and see what comes out, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting if I were you. No one really knows how things will pan out w/ the new technology that's showing up. Get what you want/need when you want/need it.

Wait, what? What are you talking about, I'm confused.
Well, we already know that it's a NTSC tuner. That is not in question here. We just need to know whether NTSC is the format in Greece or Egypt.
Actually there are two tuners offered at this time.
Ok...is the non-NTSC tuner SECAM, MESECAM, PAL, PAL N, or PAL M?
I think Greece is SECAM while Egypt is PAL.
Greece - secam-b/g, Egypt - pal-b/g.

Sorry guys, I actually ment what type of connection they had in Egypt or Greece, sorry for the confusion.

A variety of "flavors" of connection adapters are available at Radio Shack. Saw a few of the European ones that I was familiar with - Don't know what they use in either of these countries.

Now I'm even more confused...weren't you the one who brought up PAL and NTSC in the first place?
Okay okay, lets get this clear, I said,
"Do you have a NTSC connection? Or a PAL connection? Or what?"

Then G-Omaha said to me,
"I don't believe that there are any published specs on the Aver-media tuner that is used within the 8790 published. There were extensive specs published for the tuner in the 8890."

So he's referring to the TV Tuner in the 8790, not the connector types in Egypt and Greece, I think... So I said in reply,

"Sorry guys, I actually ment what type of connection they had in Egypt or Greece, sorry for the confusion."

Incase you misunderstood me if I was talking about which type of TV Tuner he got with the 8790, not the connection type they had in Egypt and Greece"

I get it now. But unfortunately after you said "Sorry guys, I actually...", G-Omaha misunderstood and thought you were talking about the shape of the physical connector, and so he responded regarding the physical connector specs. I was thrown off by his response and thought that that was what you meant...

Whew...so many misunderstandings...

Thank you for the advice. I've almost made up my mind. I'll be using this computer for games and video calibration software. I like AW but the Sagers I believe offer a DVI out.
