eMachines D620 memory?

I got a new eMD620-5517 from WalMart (Can$ 350) and would like to add some additional memory. The included manual (as well as info on the related Acer Extensa 4420) suggest PPC5300 with 667MHz; whereas the Gateway support website and e-mail from support indicate PPC6400 at 800MHz. Is this realistic for a measly Athlon based value notebook? I think I may crack it open and just have a look myself if I don't get a definite answer soon.

Thanks, that's what it also said on the crucial site for eMD620-5777 and 5772. In the meantime I opened up the machine and had a look: the sticker on the memory says PC2 5300S-555-12 so this is a bit confusing. Would it be wise to proceed with adding the PC2-6400 anyway?

You can, it would run at the lower ram speed

So, what did you find with the D620? Did you try 800 mhz ram in the machine and how much? Just trying to figure out what to do. Mine came with 667 mhz as well, but I bought a 2 gb module and added that. Works beautifully with all 3 gb recognized. much faster now, however im wondering if I should remove it all and put 800 mhz, 3 gb in, since the cpu has an 800 mhz fsb.

Any info from anyone would help. I have a D620-5748

Ok, so I talked to the emachines people and they couldnt help so I got a good Gateway tech transfered to my call. He assured that the 800 mhz would work and said that the 2 gb barrier was just put down to show MINUMUM specs since not all emachine d620's have the same motherboard.

Anyway, bought a 2gb stick and a 1 gb stick, Kingston value ram, 800 mhz, and put all 3 gbs in, taking out the 667 that came in it. The 800 mhz works great, machine is notably faster, and the bios and windows vista sees all 3 gigs.

The windows experience rating jumped up, as follows,
cpu 3.4
Memory 4.8
Graphics 4.2
Gaming 3.0
hd 5.4

Notable changes were the memory and graphics. graphics was at 3.1 and now its at 4.2. memory was i think 3.4. and jumped up to 3.8 with 667 mhz but is 4.8 with the 800. The 800 definately made a difference over the 667, hope this helps all the D620 users.

i have a d620 laptop as well. it came with a 2650e processor. i upgraded the processor to amd 4850e x2 from newegg and installed more memory. here is my index score:

cpu: 4.9
memory: 5.9
graphics: 3.3
gaming graphics: 3.0
h.d.: 5.4

p.s. how did you get your gaming graphics higher?

Hey, thanks for the cpu advice. I assume no problems with the new cpu?

The graphics didnt jump up that high until I put the 3 gb of 800 mhz ram in. I know that the shared graphics ram has some effect.

How much ram is in yours now, and what speed is it running at?

no problems with the cpu. ive tried 3 cpu's athlon, athlon x2...but the only ones that will work are the processors that have the "e" at the end. 2650e, 3250e, 4850e, etc. its a low energy processor. i have only 2gb of ram in it. it is at 800mhz, no adjustments to it, but i bought the good sticks. i upgraded ram and it helped a little, but this processor is unbelievable!! its $55 on newegg. you'll see a difference on startup right away.

i just put in 2x2gb sticks in the cpu and it recognized all 4gbs. i grabbed them from my dell notebook. im going to go buy them tomorrow. but i think that this emachines laptop is just as fast as my dell and a lot cheaper!! 1500vs300 (55 for processor; 100 for memory=450)

Do you know of anywhere that has REAL specs on the original cpu, the 3650e? I thought I heard it was a 15 watt cpu.

Ya, i could have got the 4 gb but Vista wont use more than 3 at this point, and im trying to keep this laptop cheap.

From AMD, i do not see anything about the 3650e, may be it is just a one-time for some OEM equipments

the original processor is a 2650e, but it is a emachines "exclusive" processor and cannot offer any information. the 4850e is a 45watt processor. basically, the only processor you can install in this laptop is an energy efficient am2 socket processor. no more than 45 watts. but make sure it is labeled "e" on it.
sorry for the delay. the 2650e is rated at 15watts. the 4850e is going to use a little more juice from the battery but the performance factor will persuade you for the battery life.

Can any one help walking me through on how to upgrade my 2610e processor to the faster 4850e for my emachine d620.

Thanks

its very easy. take off the back cover. unscrew the two screws on the fan. lift it out. take off the screws to the heat shroud on top of the processor. install new processor and put new heat goo on top of the processor if it does not have any. turn it on and let her fly!!! write back after you install it and tell me how great i am for figuring this out!!! lol, i tried 3 processors before discovering this one. you'll love it!

emachine D620

I just installed 2 X 2GB DDR2 RAM PC-6400 it has increase the performance alot. Not sure if systool work with this laptop?

Here is my reading:
cpu 3.4
Memory 4.9
Graphics 4.3
Gaming 3.0
hd 5.4

Anyway to imporve the GPU performance?

sorry for the delay. i would keep only 2gb of memory. however, if you really want to increase the speed of the cpu, install a amd athlon 4850e processor. it is an energy efficient one, and it works beautifully. you can get the processor for 60 bucks at newegg. if you have any questions, email me at paquette_joseph31@yahoo.com

Joedog31, do you still have this laptop?
I have one and a 4850e, but before I do the swap I would like some updates to see how it's working out.
Is the stock 65w power supply still working ok?
Is heat an issue?
Have there been any problems at all?

Thanks,

Paul

no issues...some heat but tolerable. power supply works fine. less battery life though
