possibly its just a media problem, some media just dont play well with some burners, otherwise me thinks ur not burning em correctly

Sounds like the settings in your burning software. You need to fiddle around a little...

A lot of bad media is out there, I had a bad batch of HP +RW Discs which I got off the discount table at Staples. I personally stay away from +RW DvDs with a passion I guess the sale caught my eye. No more table and no more +RW for me, -RW or -R only

Does the disc work in other machines if so copy it to a flash drive and destroy disc. The disc could have a flaw in it that the newer lense on your machine picked up causing the error.

BTW is your DVD BD or normal?

Check to see if the firmware in your unit is up to date, many non-recognized media problems is because of the (old) firmware in the unit when shipped from the factory.

I´ve had to do this with all the DVD-RW units I have purchased for both my desktop systems and laptops.

Of course, contact Alienware first as flashing anything in your computer yourself could void the warranty.

Its a Normal drive. none blue ray. It says its a RW drive. So i guess its not a DL drive but i thought it could atleast read DL but I guess not. True my alienware does not have the internet right now so doing a upgrade could fix this problem. But yes I am not saving shit to dvd's any more...ever

Shit I thought it worked in this drive but i guess the media does not work in this computer either. I went to AW site and I don't see jack shit for optical drives. nothing.

All laptop DVD/RW units have been DL capable for about two years. All DVD units read dual layers discs.

Most likely you´ve got real bad media or a firmware issue. Go to the Windows Hardware Manager menu to check the model of your drive and see if there is an updated firmware in the burner´s manufacturer website.

Again, you´re better off consulting with Alienware´s Technical Support first before flashing the firmware on your unit.

I'm not sure what I would FLASH as there are no flimware or driver updates for this drive. go see for your self at the site.

Optiarc DVD RW 75905 but I don't have the net on the laptop yet so i can't do much. I try to play those dvd in my other computers JUST now and they will not ****ing work I see 1.99GB of my .vob file on ALL MY computers now and I know for a god damn fact that the data disc burn right on these damn discs. AW can't help me because I don't have the net. ISO buster SHOWS that the file is in fact 5.08 GB but will only read the first 2GB of the file.

Its like you rip a DVD to 1 big file movie.vob file you burn it to a DL data disc but when you put it in your drive it says the file is 1.99GB and plays the fist 30min of your movie and thats it. what the ****.

if all the computers are only showing 1.99 GB then its the disk or the program that burned it... not the computer...

Is this movie you have on it have a copyright on it? If so your program is detecting it and stopping you from continuing.

The only other thing I can think of is did you finalize it before you took it out of the older computer after you burned it. A lot of people forget to do that.

The problem in detail

I am always breaking stuff I had a DL external burner I used sony and verbatium (spelling) media I used Mac the ripper when I was still on a mac but had both a mac and a PC. It would rip the files into one .VOB formated file of say 5.08 to 7.4 GB file. I did it this way because It was one file that played great in VLC player. I would move the file over to my PC for burning via a 8GB thumb drive i had laying around. I think I just used windows to burn a "data" disc and all seemed fine. How ever today when I went to chk on all the PC computers and my M17 when you right click the drive you can clearly see it says 5.08GB used 0.0mb free but when you right click the file it says 1.99GB and you can open the movie up but it only plays the first 45 min of the movie...How ever when I called the AW tech I was like let me put in my 300 movie and show you but the funny thing was I guess Mac the ripper riped that move into .99GB files and I saw all the files on the disc so I looked like a tard. Some disc have done that but I did not mind because you can play list them so...Its a problem I just don't understand.

Windows media files and Apple Quicktime should be used seperately. Windows is a hog comparted to Quicktime as far as media space (it uses more media space). It sounds like your swaping from one machine to the other using different programs to "burn" opposite codex is causing the problem. Use Mac for mac and Windows for Windows.

One program I use is mpgsteam clip. It can detangle your mess.

If you want to read/play VOB files from a DVD, set your ripping software to rip in 1GB chunks. Any larger and you'll have the problem you have now.

Why? Because most (but not all) DVD players are hard-coded for a VOB size of no more than 1 or 2GB. Your safest bet is 1GB.

So try ripping the DVD to 1GB chunks and burn your new files to DVD with software that knows how to burn a movie DVD - the files MUST be in the correct order. Nero can easily burn the DVD as a movie DVD.

Try that and let us know the results.
