Asus M5N and S5N

Thread Starter
I deciding between this 2 model on Asus M5N and S5N, which model is better ? M5N come with internal CD drive while S5N come with external CD drive. I don't know about any others spec different or performance.

Is it good to get laptop internal or external CD drive ? Will there be more heat ? or battery life last longer with/without CD drive ?

Any comments ?

Well the M6N has 5+ hours of battery life so I'm not sure you can get much better then that. The M6N also has a better graphics card. I'd go with the M6N. Internal CD drive is my preference because you don't need to worry about loosing the drive or breaking it or carrying it around with you. My dad's laptop has an external drive and I hate it.

the question was between the s5 and m5... not the m6.

the s5 and m5 are the same thickness and have the same specs..... it's personal perference about the drive...... you'll shave an extra 6 oz if you get the external.. but liike thrillryder said.. you then have to lug that drive around if you need it. But if you want to watch movies when you're out, get the internal.

Justin at proportable said that only 50 s5n's (black) are ever coming into the US.... Asus thinks the M5 is going to be more popular because of the drive. But the S5 is certainly a limited edition sort of thing

wow I'm sorry. I can't believe I misread it that badly.

hey guys..... i was just noticing the may issue of laptop and they reviewed the m5n from proportable on page 160 and the ibm x40 on page 159. The x40 got 5 stars and the m5n got 3 stars: see the m5 review here: http://proportable.g2.cc/m5n_review.jpg

Anyway, if someone can scan or just pick up the may issue.. you'll see the ibm shouldn't have gotten 5 stars.... because the next page, page 161 shows the head to head numbers and they go like this:

pcmark:
x40: 129
m5n: 148

3dmark01:
x40: 2196
m5n: 2213

wifi off:
x40: 2:25
m5n: 2:28

The m5 beat the x40 in every situation except for one that I think is a HUGE mismark..

wifi on:
x40: 2:33
m5n: 1:40

That means the m5 gets 40 minutes worse battery life with wifi on..... thats bull.... the m6 gets like 10 minutes less MAX.... same configuration, doesn't make sense.

Other than that, the look of the x40 is crap, it's slightly cheaper than the m5, but the m5 has an internal combo drive and the IBM doesn't even give you an external one.... The x40 is more identially compared to the s5n, but it's virtually the same as the m5n, minus the drive... the only difference is that you get an external drive with the s5 and not a damn thing with the x40.

Oh, that and the 8 cell battery is $200 where it's only $100 and change from proportable for the m5 or s5........ ibm is a crock of junk

I would personally get the s5n. From what I've read, the m5n's drive is not replaceable, in case it breaks down, whereas the external obviously would be. I tend to not need a cdrw everywhere I go, so the less .5 pounds or so would be nice.

By the way, proportable is not the only s5n retailer. Asus referred me to their official retailer in Cali, ESC tech: http://www.escstore.com/system_dept.asp?dept_id=SD-008

Bit cheaper there... and if the extra battery ever becomes available, I trust them to have it first. So says Asus.

no, so, who told you that? The M5 is not swappable like the M6 is, but there is a screw and the drive comes out....... that is for a dvd-burner option later in the summer.

oh, my mistake. I guess I assumed that not swappable meant un-take-out-able =P.
