XPS M140 Screen Issues

Hey everyone,

I have a XPS M140 that has a dead screen. However, what is strange is that it is only dead after it finishes booting up. When you first turn the notebook on, you see text and get the Windows XP logo with the status bar moving side to side. But once it gets to the point where you login, the screen goes off.

Doesn't seem to be a problem with the LCD. I am able to plug in an external monitor as a workaround, but would like to try to resolve the problem.

Thanks!

I am tempting to say either inverter or back lights, but have you reviewed the toggle screen FN button?

cheers ...

The toggle function button did the trick. The first time I hit it, the screen flashed briefly. I hit it a second time and the screen came up... a bit red... but eventually the color evened out after a few seconds. THANKS!

Sounds like your screen needs a new Backlight lamp and possibly an inverter. I've never relamped a panel myself so I can't tell you how its done. But I do know that having the LCD relamped by a professional costs significantly less than a replacement LCD Panel.

Unfortunately the screen is now dead. It doesn't stay on for any significant amt of time, so we are now using an external monitor. I'll have to look into possibly getting it re-lamped.
