M1730 Video card question

post #1 of 4
Thread Starter
I have an Geforce 8700m GT installed on my system.

Question 1
I work on cad and was wondering if this could be replaced with a Quadro card. maybe FX1700M and if it can be done is it a simple remove and replace or is there some modding to be done.

Question 2
If changing the card out is not possible, can this card use the softquadro hack

Sorry if this has been asked before, iI did a search and really couldnt find the answer.

Thanks

I do not think there is a Quadro card that fits into th M1730 beacuse of the SLi design. So unless the M6400 card is the same form factor your most likely out of luck there.

I am not familiar with this hack, maybe someone else can help with that.

If performance is that much of an issue I would consider going for either the 8700SLI or 8800 SLI card. it would more than make up for any improvements that a Quadro card would give you.

I think he's talking about a driver/rom hack to make the computer identify your card as a Quadro. Last time I tried to assist someone with this, it didn't work but I've never tried it myself. There are a few different ways to do this hack. One is to dump your rom with nibitor and edit your device id to be a quadro device id. However, the smarter way to do this hack is to go into the driver inf and identify your device id. Change the string associated with that id to be the name you want your card to appear as.

For example:
NVIDIA_G84.DEV_0409.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT"
replace this with
NVIDIA_G84.DEV_0409.1 = "NVIDIA Quadro FX 3600M"

The M1730 XPS uses a unique Video card form factor. There is no Quadro card made to fit that system.
