No video on replacement screen for Inspiron 1420

Thread Starter
I have a Dell Inspiron 1420, and recently my wife accidently dropped it and cracked the screen. I bought a replacement screen off of ebay and I installed it. Once I started the laptop, however, there was no video. The backlight came on while the computer was booting up, and then the screen turned dark once vista starts. It stayed dark for about a minute or so, and then it beeped once. It waited about 20-30 seconds, and then beeped again. It did this four or five times, and then the computer rebooted, and it did it all over again.
I have tried connecting an external monitor to the laptop, but the computer doesn't detect it. I installed my old screen that is cracked back into the laptop and the video works just fine, besides the fact that I can only see part of the screen. I can connect an external monitor to the cracked screen and it detects it.
I talked with the person who sold me the screen and he had me read him the part number off of the back of the screen. He then said that he would send me a replacement screen that was exact same model as the old one. I just got it today, and installed it. Unfortunately, it is doing the exact same thing that the other one is doing. Any help that you guys could give me would be appreciated.

Sounded like a DOA screen. Can happen many times in a row. Time to change vendors/sellers?

cheers ...

It is possible you're getting screens with inverters that are not compatible with your system. Power down your system and hold the Fn key down while you press the power button, this will make the PC boot to a built-in diagnostic. It also includes a backlight inverter communication test.
