Compaq Presario 1800US notebook not booting

I have a Compaq Presario 1800US laptop (2002 make). Of late, after I installed a USB wireless adapter, it has started malfunctioning. I have been getting blue screen and dump, but after a couple of days it went totally dead with a "Operating system not found" message whenever I try to boot. I am not able play much with the BIOS. Is there a BIOS upgrade available to do a hard drive self test? Any valuable suggestions would help. Thanks!

You can check the working condition of your hard drive by using one of these tools

If your hard drive is OK or pass the drive fitness test, probably the file system is corrupted after many reboots, you need to reinstall OS. Before install any software that might cause problem, you should set a Restore point so if the system is unstable, you can go back to previous state.

Sounded like a bad hard drive. Try boot the machine up with an installation CD and see if you can access the drive.

I did try installing with an installation CD, but it said "Setup can not detect your hard drive". The last thing I wanted to hear was my hard drive went bad. Anyway, thank you for your replies.
