Heres what I posted over at The GTA Place

I have a Sager NP5793 with 512mb M8800GTX, T9300 and 4GB Ram.
In the lowest widescreen settings (848x480 or something) with everything on low I get between 15 and 30fps.

You can't tell me its the computer, the graphics are worse then GTA3 which runs fine btw.
There's basically no cars and barely anyone on the street because of the low settings so it can't be AI screwing over the CPU surely.

Also with the update I now have no sound effects, only the radio.

Oh, and heres what a real pc game is like,
1920x1200, medium-high settings, antilasing, and still 60fps (admittedly it does drop down to 35 every so often.)

That is a crime to gaming. 8800GTX is like top 3 poewrfull gfx's on the market now. And if you getting such low fps with it in GTA4 i will probably get 5fps wiht my stil quite powerful 7950.

OMG! What is going! They need to get some patches for GTA4 fixing this nonsence quick or am gonna get a desktop.

Cheer

all the best blesses!

Yes, it is a crime to gaming... The game alos does not support SLI, which means my friend with 9800 GT2 (or what ever it is) and a quad core processor only gets 30 to 50fps in those settings... The game is messed up and I'm glad I didn't buy it, just using my friends copy to see what its like. Unplayable.

NVidia recommend at least GeForce v180.84 to play this game. You should install the latest driver to see if that fixes these issues.

From everything I have been reading its the coding of the game, not your drivers and not your hardware. This game is just plan old Screwed. Worse then either of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games where.

Thats what am talking about. Why can't they make GTA4 and Far Cry 2 just like they make COD5 for God sake!

THanks

Different engines. Different teams. COD WaW is running off the COD4 engine which is a couple years old as turned into a very lean engine that scales well.

I installed the Laptopvideo2go 180.84 drivers and no difference at all.
When I patched the game, I lost all audio but the radio.

I think this is going to be like a Windows Vista, leave it 6 to 12 months and maybe it will be usable.

While Rockstar already launched the PC version of its console smash Grand Theft Auto IV, we ourselves haven't tried out the game yet. It looks like game audiences everywhere are starting to get peeved about numerous issues. Players continue to complain about a variety of errors, from missing textures to crashes and Shack claims two separate, nondescript error codes that kept them from loading the game at all.
Documented bugs exist on Steam where you can also find a list of user-compiled potential fixes.
In addition to problems with missing textures, which were attributed to corrupt graphics drivers, a whole bunch of users weren't able to resolve this even after reinstall the drivers. As we've learned, GTA IV PC is also restricting certain players from changing their graphical settings.
That's not all. As it turns out, gamers are hampered by the game's DRM as well, on top of a cumbersome install/update routine for the much-touted Social Club.
Rockstar hasn't commented officially on this. Word has it that a patch is in development and there are some workarounds available.

Grand Theft Auto 4 PC Suffering From Numerous Issues

No support for SLI, texture problems, error codes, and more abound.

By Chris Pereira, 12/04/2008

It's things like this that draw ridicule for gamers who opt to play games on PC. Following Grand Theft Auto 4's much anticipated release on PC earlier this week, reports are springing up all across the internet regarding significant issues being encountered in the game. From being unable to start the game to missing textures to seemingly arbitrary limits on graphics settings, the situation appears to be nothing short of a disaster.
A quick gander at the official Steam forums shows that more than a few gamers are running into problems -- even to the point where Steam is offering refunds on a case-by-case basis, according to Voodoo Extreme. Rockstar has released a list of error codes (grab it here) in order to help identify the cause of certain errors. If you're like myself and not receiving error codes, but instead seeing awful framerates and missing textures (and by missing textures, I mean you see absolutely nothing but your car and the occasional floating road), there are some solutions -- but nothing's guaranteed to work, and they're not official fixes.
Rockstar's official response (via GTAGaming.com) casts the situation off as issues being experienced by "a small number of fans" and claims that they're working to solve the problems as "quickly as possible." In the meantime, anyone with problems is advised to contact support and check the support section of Rockstar's website.
What's perhaps even more frustrating than the errors is the inability to fully customize the graphics settings in the game's options. Voodoo Extreme has an explanation from Rockstar on what the different options do and why some are locked if you don't have what Rockstar deems to be sufficient hardware. The statement reads in part, "Most users using current PC hardware as of December 2008 are advised to use medium graphics settings. Higher settings are provided for future generations of PCs with higher specifications than are currently widely available." Check out the video above for a look at performance across a few of the game's graphics settings. If you've come across any other problems or solutions, be sure to share with everyone in the comments below. In the meantime, we'll be keeping an eye out for a patch or any fixes the community comes up with.

//On December 2, Rockstar Games released the much anticipated PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV to both retail and digital distribution outlets. Since then, there have been numerous reports of poor performance on current systems and even some cases of textures failing to load.
ZoomForum users at Steam have reported that users of systems which meet or exceed the recommended requirements are treated to results that are lower in quality than the PS3 or Xbox 360 versions. Most of these complaints have been isolated to forum posts and online discussions; however, IGN was able to interview Rockstar Games for an official response to these technical issues.
According to Rockstar, digitally distributed versions of the game purchased through Valve’s Steam service were not downloading properly to user’s systems. Refunds are being issued as per instructions on Voodoo Extreme’s website; however, it’s noted that this is on an exception basis and is not normal practice.
Rockstar’s own support website has been updated to reflect the latest drivers available for download for users of both Nvidia and ATI graphics cards and is encouraging users to update for the best performance. Rockstar maintains that these technical issues are due to “out of date drivers or we don’t support that type of card or you’re under-specced or whatever, it’s always a combination of one of those things.”
Rockstar Games insists that the problems experienced by users are extremely low; in the 1 percent region for complaints received through their customer support line. The developers have gone on record to state that the game has been designed to be “future-proof” and that current hardware will run the game; however, as hardware improves, so will the game’s performance.
In the mean time, Rockstar is urging players to update their drivers, update their Games for Windows Live software, and to update their operating system patches. Grand Theft Auto IV was released for the Xbox 360 and PS3 on April 29, 2008 and sold over 3.6 million units on its first day for release.
