speed of core 2 duo versus pentium m

hi guys.

i have the asus z70v with pentium m 2.0ghz.

i want to get the lenovo u110 with Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor L7500

how much faster is this? i don't know what the number/lettering of the core 2 duos mean as i haven't been looking for a laptop on the market since 3 yrs ago.

It's a much faster processor but how much you notice it depends on how you use the computer. General use like opening a web browser, reading emails, and creating office documents don't stress a CPU enough to make a difference. Number crunching applications like recoding video or music, playing games, or just running several applications at once will benefit noticeably.

Other factors like the operating system, the speed of your hard drive, and how much memory you have often have a greater impact on performance in everyday type applications.

From what I can see, it's a 1.6 Ghz CPU that runs at 17 watts (your Pentium M runs at 27 watts) and should have slightly higher performance in multi-threaded applications than your current CPU. However, in older applications that cannot take advantage of multiple cores in a CPU, performance should be roughly the same as your current CPU or maybe a bit less.

In terms of multitasking would the lenovo u110 be more efficient?

pentium m 2.0ghz: http://ark.intel.com/cpu.aspx?groupID=27595

Also, the hard drive rpm would be a downgrade from 160gb 5400rpm to 120gb 4200rpm. Factoring this in with the processor difference would the lenovo come out stronger? Also the video card on the u110 will be integrated video but I don't plan on playing video games so it shouldn't matter right?

I was going to get an eeepc but I found this laptop was 11.1" but still packed with core 2 duo instead of the slow atom processors.

4200rpm drives are very slow but easily upgraded.

I didn't realize the Core 2 Duo was only running at 1.6GHz. The Pentium M is basically a Core solo. The Core duo came out just prior to the Core 2 Duo and is basically two Pentium M cores. The Core 2 is an upgraded processor which is faster and more efficient but comparing a Core 2 at 1.6GHz to a Pentium M (Core solo) at 2.0GHz I don't think there'd be much difference core for core. Obviously dual cores will give you an advantage in multi-threaded applications and in Vista but I think that Lonovo is running Windows XP isn't it? Vista is noticeably smoother on dual core CPUs but XP runs just as well on one core.

I don't think you're going to notice a speed bump over your current laptop but the Core 2 Duo will be noticeably faster than the Atom.

the lenovo will be running on vista home premium

i'm afraid the hard drive cannot be removed. "120GB (4200 rpm) / ATA-100, 8mm high, 1.8" platter, not removable, Active Protection System™. does this mean there is no hope to upgrade the hard drive? =[

the lenovo u110 came out in the US in may priced at $1899 but i can get it down to $1350 due to price cuts and discounts. i'm still debating whether it is a good purchase or not (any input would be appreciated!)

*also on a side note i use Notebook Hardware Control to undervolt so my current processor usually runs at 800mhz. i'll probably do the same for the u110 if possible.

so hard to decide...

if i just want a new laptop i could get the f6 for $800...
eeepc for $500..
or lenovo u110 for $1350..

to hard to decide!!

In my opinion, expensive ultraportables are a rip-off. If you went with a slightly larger notebook (13 or 14 inch screen), you could get a significantly more powerful computer for your money.

Agreed

I agree... ultraportables are simply more expensive for less.. but after lugging my z70v for over 3 years I really want a change of pace and get a super light one!

Sigh. I mean if the U110 is $1000 then that would be okay, but even through clever discounts and cashbacks the cost would be $1350 which is still expensive for what it is.

On a second note I made a thorough search on newegg and I can't find a laptop that weights <5lbs with a better resolution than XGA

you're right.........but if OP uses his computer like you said in your previous post, even the Atom is right on par with the P-M's

So even a netbook is an option if what OP does is typical useage and not a power user.

you're talking about a different person, ss. wrong thread

would the 4200rpm hinder the performance of the laptop significantly?
it would make things load slower

how much slower??!!
Well, that depends somewhat on the specific drives you're comparing. A high-capacity 4200RPM hard drive may perform as well as a low-capacity 5400RPM drive due to greater data density. I can't speak from experience, but from what I've heard, there's a greater difference between the load times of 4200RPM and 5400RPM drives than there is between 5400RPM and 7200RPM hard drives

In my experience with Notebooks, the hard drive speed is the number one contributer to overall performance/feel.

In other words, if you want a Core 2 Duo with 2GB of ram to feel like it's slower than a Pentium 3, put a slow hard drive in it. I would personally rather sacrifice battery life and have a 7200RPM drive in my machine than anything slower than that. I had a 5400RPM drive in my XPS Gen 2 and it was way too slow for my tastes.

I've got a 5400RPM hard drive in my notebook and I also have been annoyed with it at times due to its slowness to load (compared with my impatient expectations, at least ) I plan to have a 7200RPM drive in my next notebook.

of my 25 notebooks now (soon to be 26)

about 6 of them had 7200rpm drives, all of them were light/mid/high end gaming notebooks

i played Everquest, Halo, Painkiller, and some other games, nothing major tho

ive yet to see the diffrence at all with 5400 vs 7.2k, even with normal programs, yahooIM, aim, websites

all that jazz, all in all, i cant see a diffrence, maybe you use something i dont

oh and to keep it fair, 3 of those 25 notebooks had 4200rpm drives......slow as....well slow!
one of them had a P-M ULV, the other 2 had c2d, and other was a 2.0 p-m

btw DJ, my next laptop........Asus W2v new in box, i think its gonna be a keeper :P
