New 18.4-inch Clevo Model on the Way

Thread Starter
Information out today says that Clevo is readying an 18.4-inch laptop for display at CeBiT in March. The beast will support double 9800M-GTXs, 1900-1200 display, quad core processor, and though the original source is in russian and therefore I'm relying on a translations, it looks to suggest there may be room to drop in another GPU. Whole (translated) text below.

Quote:
Taiwanese manufacturer Clevo is preparing to submit to regular market model that has high performance and includes a very advanced features.

Clevo M98xNU has a diagonal screen 18.4 "Supported Full HD - 1920x1080 pixels. At this laptop is installing Quad processor for mobile platforms from Intel and modules RAM DDR3-1333. It also has a chipset from Nvidia - MCP79. Of course same as in any gaming notebook is a powerful graphics system - two cards Nvidia 9800M-GTX, support running Nvidia Hybrid Power / Hybrid SLI / Hybrid Performance. Also, to ensure the long-autonomous work (if necessary) set another -- Fitted - graphics card from Nvidia.

According to some sources, the formal introduction of the new model will occur in the CeBIT 2009 exhibition, which will be held in Germany. Already, it can be assumed that M98xNU become the successor model M590K SLI with a diagonal 19.

^^ cool casing.

Other than the souped up cpu and gpu, I believe that Acer has stumped Clevo since May with its Aspire 8920G (18.4" & 1920x1080), which is currently selling well in Germany. Engadget had a review on this back in May as well.

cheers ...

Nice looking design and nice to see mobile quad core with a SLI config. But a Nvidia chipset? Hybrid SLI which MS officially says is "unstable and will not be supported in Vista or Win 7"?

I wouldn't touch a Nvidia desktop chipset with a 10 foot pole. And I sure wouldn't touch one in a 4k+ laptop. Fastest way to flush money you'll ever see.

Mind you, I give kudos to Clevo for yet another great design, and moving on up to the Centrino 2 + SLI platform, as well as what is likely a beautiful 18" lcd screen (if it was LED it would be even better). So this is still a move that hits some bells in the right direction. But Apple is right now learning the hard way that Nvidia chipsets are hot and short lived.

I'm curious where you get this information. I haven't heard any of this and NVidia has historically made very high quality chipsets. They are exiting the chipset market with Core i7 due to competitive reasons more than technical.

just do a google search on ms not supporting hybrid sli

As for problems with Nvidia chipsets - they are many and have continued for every generation. Go ask OCZ or Corsair about the memory controllers. Go ask any of the hardcore systems forums the number of problems they have had. Ask creative about the incorrect PCI specs and the problems with the sound cards. Out of spec SATA connections are also prevalent topics. Google it up and you'll learn a lot.

That would be correct. Just like with our current XP and Vista, Microsoft won't natively support sli video cards, instead making ATI and Nvidia supply the drivers for those setups.

As far as I'm aware, this is mostly to keep customers from complaining to Microsoft about why hybrid sli doesn't work in all cases.

I believe that Microsoft calls hybrid SLI "not recommended". That's quite a bit harsher than the situations with SLI or CF.

CLEVO is one of the last companies to produce well built, high quality and great performing laptopls, I most certainly hope they dont follow in HP's footsteps with their plastic carnival creations. The thought of an 18.4 inch CLEVO is great provided they continue to build the what are regarded in the industry as some of the best built laptops around.

If you look at apple designs...........all form and no function. It's no surprise that nvidia chipsets or mobile video cards are overheating. Good engineering and ventilation are not exactly primary considerations at APPLE, it's all about looking cool.

Meh, an ideal design for me is to have most of the ports in the back, no numpad, centered touchpad, media buttons in front. This has a few of those requirements and it does look nice but it would be way too much of a hassle to take an 18.4" laptop outside the house.

I just hope that they retain an EXCELLENT BUILD QUALITY as demonstrated in their previous laptops since Clevo/Sager are one of the few that hasnt gone cheap like soo many others.
