M1710 Dead...M1730 Replacement on the way...

Well my m1710 gpu died and after talking with Dell since it is still under warranty and they were great about everything and they are sending me an m1730 replacement. Here are my m1710 specs:
2ghz core duo
100gb 7200rpm
2gb RAM
8x DVD RW
512mb 7900 gtx

Here are the specs of the replacement
M1730 Gray
2.4 ghz T8300
250GB 7200rpm
8x DVD RW
8700 512mb SLI

Well after some minor arguing they agreed to give me the 8800 1gb SLI because I had a gtx card. So now they are going to cancel my previous build and next week I should have a new order number...a couple of questions...they were not willing to give me the physx card ( I even offered to pay for it)...is it worth trying to argue for?
Second question, the cpu right above this is a 2.5ghz but the L2 cache goes from 3mb to 6mb...is that worth trying to argue as well or should I just let both of these go?

Thanks in advance!!!

I would be happy with what you're getting as it is an upgrade from what you had. CPU is already much better than the one you had and the graphics cards are a little faster and newer as well. The physics unit is not worth anything in my opinion.

If I wanted would I be able to upgrade the cpu and/or add the physx card without voiding my warranty?

Have you read my thread its just below yours?

same situation, although i had the same question although i managed to talk them into

2.8ghz x9000 880gtx sli and 4gb ram.
seemed a shame not to get physx card but aparently now nvidia have bought Aegia Physx the technoledgy is built into the 880gtx card and unlocked with the latest drivers?

not convinced yet.

my m1710 was top spec thats why i managed to argue tp above spec, but it seems we both did well

Well...I just found out that they shipped me the original configs without the 8800 that I was promised by the tech on Friday...so after getting off the phone with the most useless tech I have to call back tomorrow when the escalation office is open. I told the tech that I am refusing delivery of this replacement and they are going to have to build another one. She tried telling me well we can send out a tech and upgrade the card...I tried to explain to the dense tech that I WORK ALMOST 100HOURS A WEEK...I do not have time for some tech to come out and replace anything. I am still trying to figure out to be around or how to show up at fedex to refuse delivery...starting tomorrow I begin my ICU rotation which equals no life...wish me luck but I refuse to accept this...ps: the tech on friday assured me that they won't send the system until they address this...well guess he was wrong...I spent $3800 on a high end notebook which I BARELY USED and it breaks...I have never even gamed on it...I still have the plastic cover on the lid...explain to me why I should accept this. I am furious!

Persistance is the Key, unfortunately these days it seems you have to deal with idiots in some over seas call centre over and over until you finally get a real tech person.

yeah, i completely understand your frustration, but it might be a long fight which requires lots of phone calls, so you telling them you work 100 hours a week might be a bad thing, because they will know you will need to give up eventually...
when my m170 was replaced, it had the 7800 gtx and it took me 6 replacements before i got the gpu i deserved. in all i spent 103 hours on the phone, and it took almost 3 months, and at time i was out of work so i had nothing better to do than to call daily and keep track of every second, names, what i was told, and all the information i could get. it was a serious fight that i eventually won, but this time i don't think i will have the energy... that was 3 years ago when xps service was decent, but i am trying the same thing, just shipping the computers i don't accept back and asking the rep to step up. so far i have sent back one 1710 that was junk, and the 1730 they are building is being canceled and another one is going to be built with the 8800 sli card (i will believe it when i see it) so its off to a slow start.

good luck man

You could buy the Physx card off of the support website for ~$160 and install it without voiding your warranty (although anything you break while installing it will NOT be covered by Dell's warranty).

I haven't found a use for the Physx card yet, so I wouldn't bother.

Also, about the 8700m GT video card- a single 8700m GT is nearly identical to a 7800 GTX Go. I've had an XPS Gen 2 with a 7800 GTX Go running right next to an m1730 with a single 8700m GT, and they were running games at almost exactly the same frame-rate.

From my research, I gathered that the 8700m GT SLI had more frames per second at lower resolutions than the 7950 GTX Go, but the 512MB in the 7950 gave it an advantage at higher resolutions. From my personal experience with SLI, I can tell you that the numbers lie- 30 frames per second on an SLI setup can stutter like 15 frames per second on a single card setup.

Dude I think your getting a great deal just getting a new laptop out of the deal. Demanding the 8800s is rather childish. Dual 8700s are waaay beter than the 7900GTX. Plus they dont get so hot that you cant hold it in your lap. People in this day and age are expecting too much.

i got my 1730 as a trade up for my 1530

dual 8700's are good, havent had any issues with games yet.

The 7900 GTX in my 1710 finally gave out and I also got a 1730 as a replacement. I can say from my experience that at high resolutions (1900x1200) the 8700 sli is worse than the 7900 GTX.

Called up XPS support and after going through the usual routine with one of the techs for an hour asked for a manager and I don't even think I was talking to him for more than a minute. He was a gamer and knew that the 7900 GTX was better and didn't hesitate one bit to upgrade me to the 8800's.

So I suppose the take home message is to ask for a manager.

the bus rate is 256 on the 9750 gtx or the 9700 gtx, only 128 on the 8700 gt. it is a significant difference and demanding the 8800 gtx is paramount imho. i am getting the 8700 sli, but i will get the 8800 upgrade, dell has no leg to stand on when comparing the 2 cards

I have been war-ing with Dell...my replacement has burned in black line at the bottom and 2 dents on the lid...both they are going to replace...yeah (sarcasm)...and as for the person who says it is childish...how about that crysis performed better on my 7900gtx than this 8700sli...explain that...video performance on this lappie is sluggish compared to the previous one...who do I have to talk to...I filed another complaint and waiting for another response...any advice on what measure to take next...for a notebook I paid 3800 for and barely used for about a year...I am not a happy customer...

I had the best luck when I asked for a manager. The biggest thing really seems to be to get someone who's either a gamer or a hardware junkie and actually knows about the video cards. And it seems that the manager's have the best shot of fitting into that group due to being on the job for longer.

Aside from that, set aside a few hours so that you can let the techs do their thing with installing random drivers and adjusting settings and just flat out let them know after every tweak what the fps your getting in your games and keep telling them that it's less than what you had with your 7900gtx.

Can't remember who said it, but "Gentle Persistence" is indeed the key. Don't bother getting upset about the tech's not being die hard guru's and just keep at it until you get someone who does know about the difference.

got mine today, brand new it is BIG! and ugly as sin... some gay pattern all over, i want to remove it somehow... my wife loves it though, shocker...

I thought id put in my 2 cents. The PhysX card is now outdated and useless. the SLI 8800 is so powerful that under non SLI mode and dedicating the 2nd 8800 to PhysX duties proves to be much faster than the PhysX card without the extra 60 watt drain to the power supply based on the PowerPack demo and GRAW. It is also extremely difficult to get the drivers to properly recognize the dedicated PhysX card at all.
