Glad to hear you got it!
is it really that ugly ?
I am still waiting for mine, and mine'll come with red wings...
I am planning on replacing them to the grey or white ones

i think so, fugly as hell, and it is just huge, everything about it is just big, cant get used to it... it is shinny, so it picks up everything. i have to clean it constantly, and the screen surround is black, and i have a black bbackground so i am always getting tricked into thinking i have a lot more screen. it will take some getting used to for me, the m1710 swa really sleak and good looking compared to this imho
oh, i ordered gray wings as soon as i found out i got blue. trying to subdue this thing is nearly impossible though, i think i will paint the blue wings black so it wont look like a 15 year old's first computer.

maybe i am too critical and i will love it soon, i sure hope so

where did you order the wings from ?

I'll chime in to say that I like the contemporary styling of the 1730 a lot more than the 1710. The 1710's silvered plastic had the same cheap appearance that it had on the laptop that I owned before and I always thought the cover on the back of the LCD was a lot more gaudy in it's appearance. While the glossy paint job on the 1730 does take on fingerprints readily it is a lot better looking, more inline with the looks of the black Vostro line.

Anway, it seems to be a general hit with others as almost everyone that's seen my new 1730 has felt the urge to tell me how good it looks. . . and that it's huge. . . because it is huge.

different strokes i suppose

Called up XPS support and after going through the usual routine with one of the techs for an hour asked for a manager and I don't even think I was talking to him for more than a minute. He was a gamer and knew that the 7900 GTX was better and didn't hesitate one bit to upgrade me to the 8800's.

So I suppose the take home message is to ask for a manager.
man you are one lucky guy

Well, finally i got my replacement rig (specs in sig). Been playing with it for a week, must say i am really happy with the performance and overall feeling.
Great lappy, cod5 maxed out runs smooth as silk

attaching some pix...

The only problem is that there's no way to control the fans and i am a little worried about the idle gpu temps which hover around 70C.

i know, i hate how big this thing is!
sell it and buy the new xps 16.

That would be a terrible trade, the M86XT (aka HD 3670) is, at best, a mid-range card. It's on par with a single Nvidia 8700m; definitely not a system for gaming:

true. but if they dont upgrade him to the 8800. its a little more than a single 8700 on a smaller screen. also for what he can sell the 1730 for, he could get bluray, 4 gig ram, 500 gig hd. thats all. however, I REALLY want to see the 1730 replacement.

didn't dell quit producing gaming laptops and passed it to alienware ?
