Did you ever get the 8800GTX? Also, it was a huge pain but I did get Dell to replace 3 battery's and 3 chargers when I got my M1730 as a replacement for my M1710. It wouldn't be bad if you had an order number for the battery's and chargers but I didn't. I bought them off eBay etc... For me to get the system in my sig I had to go though the escalation department and actually had a conference call with two people and explained to them why I wanted the 8800GTX. In the end they gave me everything in my sig as a sort of apology.

I don't even carry my 130W brick with the M1710. I have a 90W that I use. So, you can potentially use the 130W brick to power your laptop instead of the urr 220W (?) adaptor. There are a few repercussions of doing so but I'm working on that right now on my rig.

The power adapter that plugs into the back of the M1730 is a different size compared to the M1710. The M1730's plug has a much larger diameter. Am I missing something?

No. I forgot to say I really don't know jack about the M1730. I assumed since the newer Inspirons had the same power jack connection that the M1730 would too.

i am still trying... i am attempting to escalate the issue, but have yet to talk to anyone, just messages on my machine. i am confident i will eventually i just don't have the time right now to play the dell game. i will need 2 battery's and 3 ac adapters, and hopefully a backpack, it will be a fight i am sure, but they have no choice in the end, my argument is strong

Yeah the Inspirons are almost all the same but the M1730 has a much larger connection so other power supply's are not compatible.

Yeahs its a huge pain and a miniature war but don't let to much time go by or and exchange becomes set in concrete.

well, after a month and a half of battle, i finally got dell to agree to replace my 8700gt sli with the 8800 gtx! without once ever having to speak on the phone. i feel like it is (was) quite an accomplishment. i am not 100 % satisfied though, they will not replace my battery or ac adapters, i cant seem to explain to them correctly, but that is minor, my main goal was the gpu

oh, this is the email i got yesterday...

"1. Regarding the Graphics Card, please note that we will not be able to replace the graphics card on the replacement system. Systems are built with a certain “heat profile” in mind and due to which few parts will not be replaced. As per the system configuration and the availability of the graphics card, we have the graphics card with “Nvidia SLI GE 8700MGT”. Unfortunately, we will not be able to make any changes with the graphics card.

2. You had bought extra batteries and AC Adaptors to suit the old system. We will not be able to replace or return these parts as batteries only go with 1 year warranty and we only replace if there is any technical issues. A return is not an option as our return policy is 21 days from Invoice date.

3. Regarding the Backpack for the new system, you will have buy a new backpack to suit the new system."

and the one i got today after sending them a pissy email

"Unfortunately, we will not be able to make any changes with the graphics card on the replacement system.

Regarding the extra batteries, ac adaptor and the backpack, again we will not be able to issue a return or a replacement for these parts. Our terms of sales clearly says that the warranty is only for the computer and the accessories has their separate warranties. As per the accessories warranties it has one year of warranty for a replacement if there is any issues. But a return policy is only 21 days from Invoice date. We will not be able to make any exceptions on this."

after getting really pissed, i got this

"Thank you for your email. I have checked the order with the technical team here. I have processed a request to replace the Graphics Card. After the product is delivered to you, a technician will fix an appointment with you and will fix the graphics card in your system."

haven't figured out how to approach the other issues...

Glad to hear they're planning on giving you the 8800m, that's the big expensive part. My m1730 is a replacement too, and I finally decided to pull the trigger on an 8800m off of Ebay. Of course, coming from an XPS 2 (that overheated too often), even the 8700m SLI was an improvement so I was never in your boat. Anyways, the 8800m SLI exceeded my expectations, so it was worth it to me. The cooling on the m1730 seems to be much better than my XPS 2, so I'm expecting it to last a long time.

Glad to see they are finally getting you the 8800

actually, my original laptop was a xps m170 with a 7800gtx, but i did notice a 5-10 fps drop between the 7800 gtx and the 8700 gt sli at max settings, but yeah. i could have just sucked it up but it's the principal of the thing, the 8700 is just a slightly inferior gpu compaired to the 7800gtx so i whined and complained.

Oops, I thought you had a M1710, but that's just the thread starter.

Well, I'd say you did really well for yourself. For the settings I played at, the 8700m SLI was definitely better. I usually kept the resolution down, so that probably explains it.

I miss the chassis, usb ports, and slightly better battery life of my old laptop, but burning out a video card every 1.5 years was a high price to pay for it. They would've had to replace the whole system later down the line anyways probably, so I just decided to do it this past summer when I had the time.

i absolutely hate the 1730! it is just way too big and ugly as sin imho. but it hasn't broken down yet and with the 8800 it should kick ass. i really want to buy a replacement chassis and sand it all down and spray it flat black. cant stand the shiny stuff
