M1710 Dead...M1730 Replacement on the way... - Page 4

Sell the M1730 and get a M6300 - The FX3600 is a nice GPU, and the laptop is very nicely finished.

Of course there is the M6400 as well simular finish, but even faster GPU with the FX3700 which I believe is in the same class as the 8800 Sli

i think the 1730 isn't worth much, cant afford to spend more on a laptop. but i would love a m6300! very nice looking, no lights... i wonder if any parts are interchangeable?

Well, I'd say you did really well for yourself. For the settings I played at, the 8700m SLI was definitely better. I usually kept the resolution down, so that probably explains it.

I miss the chassis, usb ports, and slightly better battery life of my old laptop, but burning out a video card every 1.5 years was a high price to pay for it. They would've had to replace the whole system later down the line anyways probably, so I just decided to do it this past summer when I had the time.
oh, i did have a 1710 too, long story...

Here's a fun story. I got my M170 from Kilroy on here, and it died. (got killed actually, small children).
Dell is swapping, but they are only giving a single 8700. It had the 7800 in it. So I am beginning the same fight woodstock just finished. I have spoken online to 3 different reps, email to two and I have contacted Richard. All say the 8700 is equal to the 7800.

arghh... more updates to come.

i just had to absolutely refuse the sli 8700 was equal than the 7800 gtx, and the escalation people just kept telling me they wouldn't do anything, i just kept it up. what finally got them to coincide was the fact that the 7800 gtx has a 256k bus and the 8700 gt has 128 bit bus, even the argument that if you have sli cards you have 256 total, it doesn't equal a single gpu with 256, it is a bottleneck and they cant say anything. it takes time thats for sure... and it is extremely frustrating to say the least. my 8800 gtx cards are being installed tomorrow....

Ya. that's what I keep pointing out. eventually someone will believe me.

I kind of wish my M1710 would offically croak sometime soon so I could get something that works. I can't play a single game more than 30 minutes before it overheats and shuts down (I have it elevated, that is to say not flat on a surface blocking the vents, and have cleaned all the dust out).

I could probably get Dell to look at it for just that, but I'd be too afraid Dell would start swapping parts with faulty hardware that would just make it worse (I don't feel like playing Dell's little game).

Well if you want it fixed, than your going to have to play the game

and you have a case if it is crapping out after 30 min of play

Well. update. My existing replacement order has been canceled. I was chatting with a Dell Support Rep and Supervisor today. And I got extremely "misled" (PC word for lied to). I had chat session log to prove it. I sent to escalation and got a call from a support manager within 10 minutes apologizing and offering me the proper video card among other items. Not how I wanted to get the card, but it will work. now for the new order to be put up.

The over heating while playing video games is what I called Dell for. Just make sure you have some free time and be willing to go through the process. They'll want to make sure that it is indeed the video card, so they'll have you run a bunch of diagnostics and attempt to duplicate the issue. I'd recommend warming the laptop up prior so that when you boot a game for the guy, it'll crash without too much waiting.

If you have complete care, it's also a good time to mention any cosmetic problems as well. Those are covered as well, just aren't usually considered to be as big of a deal from us users.

Aren't these second hand parts bought from ebay? I wouldn't expect any company to cover something like that. This is nothing new, they don't support any upgrades that you make on your own such as memory, hard drive, etc.

If your still thinking it is too big you could still sell that M1730 with the 8800 in it, and get a precision M6300 or M6400 from the Outlet.

That M1730 gota be worth around 2K now.

Woodstock, your a freakin genious!!!!

I just got the M1730 as a replacemnt for a M1710. My old system had the 7950GTX, the new one cam ewith 8800m gt in SLI. I used your argument above, and like you mentioned the tech tried to convince me that 128 plus 128 = 256. I argued the bottleneck and now I am getting the 8800 GTX install within 3 business days!!!!!

Thanks Woodstock!!!!

P.S. so far Dell has replaced the wireless card, bluetooth, lcd bezel, and speaker (twice)... and i have it less then a week.

np, cant argue with dells own policy

Yes, two unconcatenated 128-bit buses is effectively a 129-bit bus although I am unsure how these buses are used in SLI.
