DELL Inspiron 6400 BIOS shows "No battery installed".Battery indicator constantly RED

Thread Starter
My Dell inspiron 6400 has a battery that works amazingly but recently, I noticed a change in the behaviour. Anytime I switch the laptop on, the LED battery indicator shows me red meaning something is wrong even when the battery is fully charged. The battery charges normally even when I intentionally drain out the power and try charging it again. This is just to make sure that the battery charges fine. Infact, in windows, it shows me that the computer is on AC power even when it is not plugged into an AC outlet. The BIOS shows "No battery installed" and windows tells me the same. Summarily, everything is fine except for the LED indicator showing Red and the BIOS telling me that no battery is installed.

I would first "borrow" another battery and/or ac adapter and see.

I have the same problem, and I also tried with another battery and/or another ac adapter, but that didn't solve the problem. Any other suggestions?

Thank You!

Try removing 3rd party power management, re-install chipset driver and/or re.install OS. Another place worth taking a look at is the computer properties in device manager.

I just have the same problem with my Dell Latitude D410:
In BIOS Battery Info: Battery not installed. And also the batterypower window says no battery.
Dell told me, that I should buy a new battery. But the battery works normal with sufficient working time and I fear a new battery would not solve the problem?

Any idea where I can look for the failure?

Do you have the latest BIOS version?

How about borrowing another battery somewhere else first, not necessarily to be new.

I think my BIOS A05 09/28/2005 is the latest?
I don't know anybody using such a battery.

Bios version is ok.

Take the comp to a shop and see if they can test it with another battery. Check the yellow page, some electronic repair shops would certainly carry different types of batteries.

I looked to battc.sys and CmBatt.sys and installed the latest versions and now all is ok!!!
This should have advised me the Dell service specialist, instead offering a new battery.
Thanks.

Try unplugging the power cord while in the BIOS. If the same behavior occurs in the BIOS then we can be sure it is not an operating system problem (and I doubt it is an operating system problem). To enter the BIOS press F2 when booting the computer.

The latest Bios version for the Inspiron 6400/E1505 is A17 here.
