Dropped my Dell laptop but I have CompleteCare - Can I wipe my hard drive beforehand?

I dropped my XPS by accident and dented it up pretty badly. The screen won't close right and stuff. Good thing I've got CompleteCare

Anyway, I can still use the laptop but I really would like to get it repaired. I do not like the idea of my sensitive info being received by them, though. I'm totally positive they're going to salvage the parts from the laptop to maximize their profits. I'm pretty sure the HDD is going to be one of them. I wanna make sure that my data is un-recoverable. Do they care if I wipe my entire drive with a 3-pass wiping algorithm?

I would and not worry about it

Maybe format and reinstall the OS so at least it boots up for them

Personally if it has been dropped like you described I would want a new HD anyways

DBAN Will wipe your hard drive, it's free, and nobody's going to retreive any information from it when you're done.

Mind you though, Dell doesn't salvage hard drives, they only ask for those to be returned to keep people honest about needing a replacement drive. Returned hard drives I beleive are disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. It won't end up at a flea market.

No matter what they do with the HDDs I HIGHLY recommend you to erase all your information.

A friend of mine sent her laptop for repair, Dell repaired it and sent it back to her, the problem is that she never got it back. The laptop got lost/stolen somewhere on the way. Not only she lost all her data, a few days later she found out that someone was using her email account.

Yeah, my E1705 fell down 1 flight of stairs but my Accident Prevention took care of a Depot Rebuild and test. Before DHL picked it up they said pull out the HD - you don't need to send it in. But I blame the fall for causinf multiple future breakdowns of the video card, LCD screen, and motherboard. My warranty totally paid off and I beleive in Dell's service, but I get the best because I'm EPP.
