[yet another] Sony AW RGB LCD screen question...

OK. So I understand that it's a regular TN screen with but with a better backlight...

Here is what one person writes:

"I was almost dead set on the top 18.4″ Sony AW model with the RBG LED that’s advertised to cover 137% of Adobe Color Gamut, I read a review over laptopmag claiming 180 degree viewing angles, I also searched all notebook forums and everyone thought that would be an IPS screen.

It was good that I decided to check it out in person before I order one. It was such a huge let down. That was just another TN screen with mediocre viewing angles, and is now completely out of my list.

So the whole “RGB” (no matter CCFL or LED) thing along with ___ (insert a random number here) % color gamut is just another “cheap” trick to make money."I was almost dead set on the top 18.4″ Sony AW model with the RBG LED that’s advertised to cover 137% of Adobe Color Gamut, I read a review over laptopmag claiming 180 degree viewing angles, I also searched all notebook forums and everyone thought that would be an IPS screen.

I am looking to buy this computer as I am a photographer; while I am not very picky when it comes to monitors (let's say, I don't do photography for a living but I do calibrate my Dell's 17" laptop screen) I would just like to know how correct is the statement above. Is it just another "hype" and "trick" or is the screen offered by Sony is the best available at the moment? I don't want to settle for a lesser laptop + good external monitor, so I am looking to get everything in one package.

Any input?

I am an amateur photographer and I was as well looking into the AW model with the adobe fanciness and the one without. I have only seen the without model up front at a local Frys and I really liked it.

I have not seen the Adobe version so I am curious about it as well. They are certainly charging and extra 600 easy for that feature. I wonder if the Sony Style store locally has them on display side by side.

Currently I am torn between the hP 18.4 incher vs the Sony one. I will post more if I find out anything.

I looke at the HP 18" as well and found the screen to be too glossy and the colors not as accurate as the Sony. Also, the viewing angles appeared better to me on the Sony. I ended up getting the non-RGB screen and am very happy with it.

I am wondering about the true difference between adobe rgb and non-adobe rgb on the Sony AW.

if you are playing a blu ray movie or watching a you tube movie lets say... would you be able to tell the difference? I get that your pictures printed will be the same color you saw them on the screen, but for ANY other application... movies... in photoshop... etc etc ... is there any noticable difference?

if i had photoshop openon both computers making a graphic or logo (exactly the same)... would one screen actually look different than the other?

SONY not offering the AW laptop

I tried to order a Sony Vaio AW with the Adobe RGB LED display yesterday and was told by the Sony rep that the model was discontinued. I asked what the replacement would be and she did not have an answer. Do any of the photographers on this list have any first hand experience with any providers displays that claim to show the Adobe RGB color gamut?

I am a neophyte to all of this.
When I was n New York I purchased a 18 inch Sony Vaio notebook. I tried to play a movie on it tonight and the screen is all blue. I don't know how to escape. ESC doesn't work. I shut it down and started it up and the screen pops up. Help. Thanks.

Welcome to NBF bella!

. What is your Sony model?

. What is your OS?

. Is your OS up to date?

. Movie: is this a DVD? a file?

. What media (movie) player are you using?

cheers ...

well well well! i just went to sonystyle today... and the RGB screen model is GONE! there is still some RGB related text on some screens though...

update.. CHAT WITH SONY REP....

Please allow a moment for an agent to respond.

You are now chatting with 'Richard'

swiftman: Hi Richard... did you guys discontinue the Sony AW RGB Screen mode? if so... why?

Richard: We are sold out at the moment. Have been for a couple of days. Once we get the parts that where out of stock in, it will be back online. As of right now, don't know if it is discontinued.

swiftman: i see... now, is the RGB screen noticably different than the regular one? will is see a difference in say... a blu ray movie? i am not really worried about maximum color reproduction in photos... just want to know if it makes that big of a difference in day to day activities.

Richard: I think it would make a difference but nothing to huge on day to day stuff. I think you will still get a great quality as the AW is HD screen,

swiftman: i see. so what are the advantages of getting the RGB model? is the screen the only difference? and as they are both HD screens... the extended color pallete of the RGB is is the only advantage over the two models correct?

Richard: Yes, that would be the only advantage. It just offer more color and a good option if you work with web design, a lot of photo editing and programs like that.

as of today, you can no longer customize an AW on sony style.

I am skeptical to believe this is only a lack of parts issue anymore. After all, it would be silly to think they are all out of a certain Intel chip or memory sticks, and that is the reason the product is gone. Also, they could still be taking orders on it, and leave it up, so they know just how many parts they need if that is indeed the case. But you don't even have that option available anymore. You now can only buy a unit that cannot be modified and is sold as it.

I dunno...now it really does seem that the AW is being either discontinued or updated completely at this point. does anyone know anything more?

an update with backlit keyboard would be awesome.

I've been to a sonystyle store just to check this RGB screen and rest assured it is awesome, the colors, viewing angles, etc blow away any other notebook screen, and many desktop monitors, I've ever seen.
