Processor upgrade for Acer 5051AWXMi

Hello,

I have an ACER 5051AWXMi with a AMD Turion 64 MK-36 processor.
After reading some forums I became aware that it was possible to upgrade to a dual core processor. I have now bought and installed an AMD Turion 64 MK-36 TL-64.

The upgrade was unsuccessfull.

After installing the processor I started the computer and immediatelly the fan gradually increased its speed untill the computer turned off. This took no more then 3 sec.

I started the computer a 2nd time and everything went well. Windows started and reconized the processor. New drivers were installed and I restarted the computer for the new drivers to take effect.

Once again the computer did not start. I insisted a couple of times and eventually it started and windows did show the correct processor. This time I fiddled with the computer and had it on for just over 30 min.

Now for me to get the computer to start it will take me around 10min of it continuously and automatically shutting down, sometimes just after bios and sometimes in the middle of the windows xp boot.

Can anyone explain to me what exactly is happening to the computer? I assume it is overheating but when it does start it works fine!!! Is there anything I can do to solve this problem or did I buy the wrong processor?

Cheers,
Philip

the as5050 can support amd S1 (Socket 638) processors based on the 90nm (nanometer) process. It's a safe bet that the tl-64 you bought is a newer 65nm processor. these 65nm processors will not work properly in your unit. You may want to stick with a TL-50 to 52 just due to the small thermal module your unit shipped with.

I have successfully installed tl-60's into your unit, but they do run extremely warm and I would not recommend it.

check out cpu-world.com for more info, and when you shop for processors use the amd product codes such as (TMDTL56HAX5CT ) and this will hopefully get you the right one.

While you are at it, I would max out the memory to 4GB for a nice quick and speedy unit.
