If you set a hard drive password and now you cannot remember what it is, then there really is not much you can do. You will not be able to use the hard drive until you remember the password.

^^ and next step is the manufacturer itself.

Discussion of Bios/hardware hacking/bypassing is a no-no at NBF. Good lucks

iirc doesnt jelly bean get rid of a hdd locked password?

and ultimate boot cd from spotmau

both are pricy programs i think?

I don't know which Jellybean you're referring to, but Hard Drive passwords cannot be removed via Software. The hard drive password is part of the ATA spec. If the system has ATA password support in BIOS the system won't even boot past POST and the hard drive password prompt so a Boot CD will not work. If you put the password protected drive in a system that doesn't have BIOS support for an ATA password the drive won't initialize and you can't do ANYTHING with it. Beleive me, I spent the better part of a weekend learning all about ATA passwords.

The hard drive will have to be replaced.

Dell can only help with a BIOS password. Not a Hard Drive password.

Are you kidding me?

If someone comes into a tech forum with a first post and asks for help in removing a password from a locked computer you don't help him. There is a reason there's a policy against such discussions. Think about it.

If a person is genuine and has forgotten the password to a system they have legitimate rights to they can contact the manufacturer for help with the serial number to the computer and in the future they will learn to remember their passwords.

Sorry for being harsh but this annoys kind of thing annoys me.

Well said!

Legitimate owners have ZERO issue asking assistance from manufacturers regarding BIOS/Hardware locking issues.

The excuse of "taking a long time" or "cannot part with own comp for a period of time" is NO excuse!

Forum users have weighed in with some good and polite and lawful suggestions.

This thread is now closed.

cheers ...
