That is a great laptop, Unless you're willing to go with NewEgg or one of the other ASUS online resellers you are going to be limited in choice.

the resolution choice sucks, but going to really be tough as far as a gaming laptop.

be better to ask what will play these games. what size screen do you want?

The resolution is fine. That is a 16x9 note book instead of a 16x10. That is the same resolution as a 720p LCD TV. I have a 15.4 with 1280x800 and love it.

I also agree that is a very good value and should play most games nicely at good quality settings.

I don't like how they call it a "Centrino 2 Processor." There's no such thing. It comes with an Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 processor on a Centrino 2 branded notebook.

Nij, if you have not purchased yet, I've been doing the 'gaming laptop' dance this week myself. that's not a bad unit you've found for an instore item, but I would like to throw out to you a unit I came across this week in my search.

For the money you are looking to spend at BB, you can custom build an HP DV7t with a 17" display, 1440x900 (icons/text on a 1280x800 screen are just too big on screens over 14" to me), 9600M GT 512, BlueRay w/ dual layer dvd burner, wireless N and bluetooth, 320gb hd, 4gb ram, P7350 or P8400. So a somewhat better "gaming" laptop as it uses the GT instead of the GS if you customize it that way. You may need to wait on a good coupon though if you want to order from HP.

Tuesday HP had a 30% off coupon which would have made this unit under $1,000 (so if you wanted to spend $1300 you could have gotten a 3yr full damage protection plan to boot or upgraded the CPU, HD, or display). That coupon didn't last a day before it was used up, so gotta wait for that one again.

or, you can find these in remanufactured form on ebay, I found essentially what i just listed above for $950 with at least 1.5 yrs of a 2yr warranty still intact.

I've been focused on finding a laptop with BlueRay so I can use it as my BR player at home, and watch BR at a night job I have. I initially found a refurbed HP 9830 built just like the dv7t except with a T5550 cpu and 8600GS and HDTV tuner included, for $789. The 8600GS is at least twice as powerful as the old M9800 in my old Dell 9100, but for less than $200 more, I decided the 9600GT would simply be more useful longer. (and I can always add the HD tuner later as that interests me as well).

either way you go, enjoy !

What about for Quake 4 and other FPS games - does a 16 x 6 have enough resolution for all the details?

Is the stock graphics good enough?
