alienware m15x or m17? O.o

Hi,

I am looking into buying my first alienware notebook , either the m17 or m15x. Not big on the 2450$ starting price(I live in canada) and lack of skullcap option on the m17x and the m9750 Is just too old(why do they still offer that anyway?). I've looked at dozens of reviews for both systems and am leaning towards the m15x. I aim on getting it in late first quarter of 2009 to early 2nd quarter. Will the m15x be too old by then?( I want to keep it until at least 2012). I understand the m17 is newer offering the ability of two graphics cards, newer processors etc, therefore giving it more of a "futureproof" quality then the m15x. Will the m15x be able to play games on medium+ setting at native(1920 x1200, 2.8 x9000, 9800m gt) through until 2012?. I'd rather go with m15x then m17. I like how its smaller. Thanks for the help and quick replies!!! Owner input wanted!!

future proofing go w/ the m17, the m15x and 17x are already way (out) dated tech. but if price is a major concern u prolly want to wait 9 months to a year for the core i7 line to be released in the mobile sector as early benchmarks and reviews of the desktop versions show it utterly destroying the previous gen of tech which is the current gen for mobile.

hmm, that makes sense to me but not waiting another year =|. I was wondering if I were to get the m15x in say around march-April and they relase a different laptop with newer technology within a year could I return for full refund and get the other one?

they wont do that...

There's always something better around the corner. If you wait for it, you will never get a machine. (look at my sig.)

I think in general you can count on a couple years of good performance. As time goes on, you will have to lower settings, but if the game is actually fun, maybe you don't need the settings cranked to enjoy it.

the m17 with one card is a pretty powerful machine. You might want to consider spending under 2 grand now, and then buying again sooner rather than later. Then in a couple years if i7 is the thing to have, you can buy a new machine.

If you like the smaller size, then your decision is made already.

But for me, the possibility of upgrading gpu's to the 4k series was enough to lean me in the direction of the M17. That and the quad :P

well I suppose I'll go with the m15x at maxed specs.(x9000 2.8ghz, 9800m gt, 1920 x 1200, 320gb 7200rpm, games, extra adapter, few other goodies and windows vista,(of course -.-'). Only thing that MAY deter me from this would be AW releasing skullcap for the m17x, or giving the option of ATI mobility radeon 4870's in cfx on the m17. Given the rate technology is progressing I should have a different notebook before the beginning of 2012. That being said, do any of you think I could fetch 2000$ on ebay for this bad boy then with the listed specs?.

15x is great for portability, but is wayyy old!!! it features santa rosa technology which has been out for 2 years now. Everyone knows in computer terms that 2 years is ancient, its still a capable machine now, but in 1 year or two years down the road it will perform like a dog!

Isn't it that way with all 'brand new' technology? If I remember correctly, you were griping about the m15x when it first came out even though it was the first 15.4" laptop to have a beast of a gpu under the hood...

Yeah cuz it was about 6 months after everyone else launched their SR platforms, Look how long it took em to get a Monte out the door, and still no 15x,17x monte refreshes, the i7mobile architecture wont be here for a year and then itll prolly take AW another 6 months after everyone has launched to get their product out. So if AW waits for the I7mobile to refresh the 15x, the 15x will have about 36 months in between refreshes..... ouch

I plan on getting a replacement to my current laptop in the coming year. I have had my m5500 for almost 3 years now and while it still works very well, there are some applications that will not run as smoothly as a new Core 2 Duo system would. (i.e. video encoding)

I am still looking at the m15x, however the verdict is still out until I know for sure what will be available when I get my enlistment bonus.

I live in wine country and I get a rather healthy shipment of wine every month, so the beer is out (though I do love beer. ) and as for the hookers, eh, not quite my style. (That is what the wife is for. )
