AppleCare... Why get it?

Ok. AppleCare is $240 and we're in a recession.

Why should I get AppleCare? I see it is often highly recommended. If I am not a klutz, though, why should I worry about getting it?

(knocks on wood) I've kept my last laptop for 4 years with out so much as a drop or a ding (knocks harder on wood)... I don't think I'd drop or damage an MBP, anyway.

Beyond accidentally inflicted damage... is there really any advantage to having AppleCare?

For bonus points, can anyone tell me the time window after my purchase in which I can buy AppleCare and add it on?

I personally tend to reccomend Applecare for the laptops at the least. To give an example, when I had the keyboard go out on my MBP it would have cost $250 just for parts to repair it. That by itself would cover the cost of Applecare.

applecare is worth it because the cost of parts for laptops can be insane. if your motherboard or lcd goes or even simple parts it can be hundreds of dollars. it seems like it wont happen but it does still occur and you dont want to be that small portion that suffer an issue after warranty and have to pay the price for it.

as far as i know it can be purchased any time within a year of the original purchase, but best check with apple to be certain.

Apple Care is worth it if you can't afford to replace the notebook should you have something bad happen. BUT ... double check, I don't believe it covers accidental damage or user induced problems (it's been a while since I've had it, so maybe things have changed).

I believe you are correct, Apple Care is not accident insurance. It will not cover misuse(Dropping, spilling liquid etc.) It only is a warranty on the parts and labor used to assemble the laptop from normal wear and tear throughout the life of the laptop. So if your screen develops problems, or your keyboard or trackpad stop working, your HD crashes(NOTE: It will NOT cover the data on the HD itself), etc.

AppleCare does not cover batteries, however, unless the battery loses it's charge abnormally fast or is bloating/leaking, etc.

My SuperDrive went out 3 days after my standard 1 year warranty was expired! The Independent Apple dealer in my area wanted over $300 to replace. It would have been nice to have the AppleCare.

It is worth checking out if some discount, like for education, can be applied.
