S96J - Screen won't come on, etc

Hi,

I have an S96J laptop; my second one. Today I was travelling a bit with it (in a bag, in a car) and once I got to where I was going and sat down, it wouldn't turn on. I quickly discovered that the battery was dead. I must have accidentally hit 'reboot' instead of 'shutdown' when I packed it up. Plugging in the AC adapter lit up the battery-charge light, but the computer still wouldnt turn on. I would hit the power button and nothing happened. I've had this problem, especially on a dead battery, many times before with my previous S96, so I just let it sit and charge for a while. Later I tried and noticed that the power light finally on the front lit up, but the screen never came on. I can feel the HDD running, the CD-ROM drive works, and the activity light seems normal (it lights up during boot then turns off). Still no screen. This second S96J has given me no power problems before like my first one, but it did have a backlight on the LCD that would occasionally flicker (just barely). It also produced a low noise in my audio output that I fixed by lifting the ground, so it's obvious that the power supply is less than perfect.

I have a hunch I'll have to replace the power supply, but thought I'd just check to see what others think first. Thankfully, I think it's still under warranty.

I thought of testing to see if it really is just my screen that won't turn on by plugging in my iPod. If my OS is loaded, as it should be, the iPod should bring up its 'do not disconnect' screen. Well, it didn't. Just to be sure, I tried it on another computer and sure enough the disconnect screen DID come up. So something other than just the screen is messed up. Not sure what to make of it though.

do you have an external display you can plug in to the notebook? if you get something on the external display, you've got a problem with your notebook screen. if not (and off-hand, I'd guess this is more likely from your iPod description), you've got a problem with your video card and/or motherboard.

External display does not work. I guess I'll be sending it in for repair then.

Have you tried removing the battery and then pressing the reset switch (if it has one) or holding down the power on button? Of course the A/C power is NOT attached during this procedure! That may reset the computer for you and it may boot normally.
