8790 with game console

post #1 of 29
Thread Starter
I'm trying to connect my PS2/XBOX to the 8790 using the TV tuner. I am trying to use the s-video connection but i get no sound. I do get video but it comes in black and white.
I am able to use an rf connection and connect my PS2 the way as connecting the cable wire but the video does not give a rich and clear image. the image looks dull and ys i tried adjusting video settings such as brightness and color.
MY question is has anyone else experienced this type of "problem" or something similar to it.
Or is it just my machine and should get the tv tuner replaced.

well the picture wont be that great because the RF connection isnt the greatest quality. thats why all newer consoles use the Red,Yellow and white connectors. but i dont know if it should be real bad. other then that, wait for other responses, i havent had the chance to do any of that stuff.

i did use the red, yellow, and white connectors but i have to use that extra cable to connect it to use the s-video port

then somethings up, quality should be as good as it is on a standard tv. hhmm

Red and White are the Sound - you need to convert that to a mini-plug that will attach to the sound-in port of the TV Card. The yellow is video. This will have to be converted to S-Video - or - if your game has an S-Video out, simply use that.

Normally if the Video is B/W, that is an indication of a bad or low quality S-Video cable.

There are also "setting" that may need to be changed within the software when you chage the input from Tuner to S-Video in.

Another reason for the b/w picture woud be that the television format is different between the input source(tv tuner) and the output source(PS2/Xbox). i.e. PAL/NTSC and 50/60Hz option.

I beleive it is a bad cable. I used the one that sager gave me. Hopefully they can find out if it is just the cable or the tuner. I'm having it service for other problems though.

I saw the same problems and thought it was my dongle. I reported it to SAGER a month back and haven't heard squat. I think the route I'm going to go is buy a xbox cable with s-video. That way its a direct connections instead of going composite RCA --> s-video. You can get them on line for $20.00.

Do you have anything plugged into the "sound in" jack on the TV tuner?

the only cables connected to the 8790 are the power cable, usb mouse, ethernet cable, and the svideo cable

They reason you aren't getting sound is that you're not hooking up the sound from the xbox to the computer! S-VIDEO doesn't carry sound. You need to connect the red/yellow to the line in on your laptop.

i do get sound when i watch tv though.

You need to connect the s-video to the laptop and convert the standard white and red rca cables to an 1/8 inch mini stereo cable. Those will plug into the tv tuner card.

S-video --> picture

L+R rca --> sound

You also have to verify that you have selected s-video input for the video and verify that audio is being used from the tuner card.This should be an option in the Tuner software that your using. And its a good idea to verify the xbox settings to verify its set for NTSC.

There is aso a couple of "sound settings" in the TV Tuner configuration screen. After setting these you will need to insure that the appropiate sound input device is enabled in the Volume Controls.

Bad picture with s-video xbox cable

Dirtstyle, or anyone,

I bought a s-video xbox box cable (Pelican) and the picture looks like crap. Does anyone have any positive results with the picture using an s-video cable (which I think Dirtstyle said he did). If so, could you give me the brand and model number?

Thanks,

smithmal
