hmm, did you get a s-video connector, or a straight composite cable? I decided that the Pelican is probably a piece of crap so I'm going for the big guns:

xbox s-video Monster Cable
(if this doesn't work I'm going to be pissed)

BTW the sound problem was handled by using a RCA 1/8" Y-splitter which you can get at any radioshack. I did'nt bother plugging into the lappy's line in port (although I suppose I could have if I had a Y-split male instead of a female), instead I just plugged in my headphones for better sound quality.

just an svideo connector did it for me.
if it doesnt work with the new cable then most likely your tv tuner could be defective but dont quote me on that. Contact sager if that is the situation.

answer to all my prayers

Hey guys,

So I went out and bought the super-duper nitrogen gassed s-video monster cable for the xbox. I plugged it into my s-video port of the tv tuner and the picture was much nicer. The only problem is that theres a 1-2 second delay in graphics and the audio is out of sync (crap).

You may ask why the hell don't I play xbox on my tv? Well the WXGA screen on the SAGER is super sweet and I can keep it on my laptop while relaxing in bed. I've got a wireless xbox controller so only thing else needed is a coke and a smile.

After zooming around the internet a bit I found this little beauty:

X2VGA High Definition VGA Pack

The reviews are stellar from all the noteworthy hardcore xbox sites. It allows for 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i. This way, I can play xbox using HDTV quality without spending the duckets on a HDTV. Plus it allows for 5.1 surround sound.

In any event I've resounded myself that two things about the 8790 are total subpar (especially for 3,000 bones): the tv tuner and the soundcard.

BTW if you'd like to play your PS2, Xbox or Gamecube on your PC you could buy this:

VD-Z3

I believe the comparisons between the X2VGA and the VD-Z3 are quite similar. The only reason I didn't go with this product was b/c it was on backorder status.

good to hear you found a solution. sorry i couldn't help you. I went back to fry's to find the cable i bought but with no luck it was gone.
I guess i'll get to play against you when halo 2 comes out and just so you would remember the a$$ whooping you received, i'll use the 8790 to record it. lol

Hey guys,

I've still had this nagging problem about not being able to play my xbox games on my laptop screen. I know some of you may think its a bit stupid to play xbox games on a laptop screen (as you could just hook it to a tv), but I'd really like to just use my wireless xbox controller and have the screen sitting right on my lap while the xbox is tucked away under the bed. Moreover I've heard a great deal of private school students/college students can bring a laptop to school, BUT NOT a tv. So this would be a work around for them as well.

After doing much research, I found out that a great deal of tv tuners actually compress the tv signal initially and then transfer the image to the vid card. This is leads to some audio syncing problems as wells as video time shift (i.e. lag). Some of the time shift can be 3-5 seconds which makes playing a console game on a laptop screen incredibly frustrating. In any event, it seems a solution has been found (see link)

solution

via using an external tv tuner (USB 2.0). I know that the sager comes with a tv tuner, but its a much inferior product vs many of the firewire/usb 2.0 products currently on the market. So if you're interested in playing console games (xbox, playstation, gamecube, etc) on your laptop screen check out the link.

Hi i was just looking at this thread because i recently bought the VD-Z3 for my xbox and i am wating for it to show up at my house. i also have a gamecube and i was looking at other ways to hook it up to my monitor, Right now i have a WinFast TV2000 XP Deluxe right now the image quality is par not as good as a reg tv but if you sit back a little like a normal tv then it looks almost the same.. the quality of tv on it is just the same as a tv but you can record to you HD and even record straght to a cd. but i wanted to get a nice adatptor for my 19" flatscreen CRT(build with the same tube as the sony trinitron HDTV) so to make a long story short i will let evey one know how the VD-Z3 looks compared to my tvtunner card.
