They're the studio series (not XPS) and they've been out for a while now. The series has 2 laptop s and the Hybrid Desktop, an ultra-small system with notebook components.

They aren't gamer machines, the video cards are average. They're intended to be multimedia machines. They also have a custom design thing going for them....maybe they'll move it to the XPS.

I realise currently that the xps and studio are completely different models designed to do very different jobs however,

Here's the link to the advertisement. If you look at the bottom it seems to be advertising a new kind of laptop.....a Studio XPS laptop coming soon.......does this mean a new model ? it's well overdue (IMHO) as the current xps models have been around for more than a year now.......or is it just an advertisement typo......I'm wanting to buy an xps1530 type model but want a more powerful card than the current and outdated 8600gt.....perhaps 9700gt or above.......I was hoping Dell might release a new machine with better graphics....

Yeah, I see what you mean at the bottom of the ad.

Seems like Dell is going to merge the studio and XPS lines in some fashion . . .

engadget report from August suggests that there'll be a 13" and a 16" model:

Haven't been able to find much other information outside of whats in that article though. . .

I have no information on it either. I don't get the Dell Home ads (only Small biz). And I only get service manuals a week before a product is released.
