$2,700 ebay new/refurbished- this is a crap shoot to get a good one
$????? craigslist- if you are lucky

So, my question to everyone is: which is better? I know that the XPS beats the Gateway by about 3000+ marks ( if you upgrade the CPU in the Gateway and OC the GPU you can get 11K marks I have seen this in other forums ), but the price difference is about $2500. This is with the the XPS being purchased NEW from DELL and the Gateway purchased NEW from BB and the CPU upgraded to a P9800 . I am a big gamer, mostly emulation (MAME, Dreamcast, Saturn, other) and the new FPS games and I need the power, but the cost......???? Thanks.

For that big difference in price, I'd take the Gateway over the Dell anytime of the day! And the 9800GTS is not bad.

cheers ...

I just looked at this laptop at best buy a few minutes ago. It is one bad laptop for the price.

I actually am home now re-imaging the two asus laptops I bought and going to trade them for the gateways.

I bought the P-6831FX a year ago and have been kicking myself in the arse for not waiting longer! the new equipment they've put on these things is absolutely amazing! 1066 FSB! 1920x1200 screen included! a decent CPU! AHHHHH why did i buy the first gen FX!!!! :P I highly recommend gateway's FX series for the gamer on a budget. The only draw back is that the GPU is soldered to the motherboard so if either the motherboard or the GPU fails your system is shot! Although that Dell comes with 2 HD's set up in RAID 0 and has a SLI set-up; and the 2 8800m GTX set-up will perform better than the single 9800m GT. I'm guessing the GPU's are where the extra 3000 3dmark points come from because the dell has a 800 MHz FSB. My 6831 has a single 8800m and it's more than what I need to play Warhammer and EvE turned all the way up. Although I did put a T9300 CPU in it to eliminate the bottleneck from the old T5450. Now if you want to play something like Crysis with no problems and no worries go with the Dell (can't believe i'm saying that). Really you could mod the Gateway to almost match if not out perform the dell on every level accept the GPU; but that would require you to void your warranty. Does the Dell have expandable GPU slots? Have you looked at the other gateway FX models available through thier website?
