Hi i have a Dell Inspirion 2600 just did a clean wipe and install of windows xp all the new updates and all the drivers from the disc and checked for others on Dells site. The usb ports will read a device will pull info off my memory stick and when i plug in my device i scan vehicles. But i show i have no com ports but com port 3 which is assigned to the modem.

I have checked the bios setting tried to created a port in the irq address with no progress. I dont know what to do now someone suggested usinga PCMCIA card to set up com ports is there a fix to this??

USB devices should be automatically assigned system IRQs and I/O addresses by plug and play, and they shouldn't be listed as COM ports. I don't really understand what your issue is. It sounds like you're looking for something that doesn't need to be there.

Well whatever its listed as thats what its called on my old ibm thinkpad 600 . What i do is scan cars through the aldl connector for the check engine light problem and i flash the pcms in the cars to make changed for fuel and spark tables. So i have a cable with a interface box that plugs into the usb port im not getting any connection to my cable interface on two differnt types that im using. I know its not them because i can use them on my thinkpad. They are called com ports on my thinkpad i figured id see them as the same on the Dell either way its not working for me lol

Okay, so if I understand you, the interface box connects to the computer via USB and while it does work on your old Thinkpad, it's not working on your current Dell?

yes thats correct and i have all the software for the pc and interfaces installed on the dell everytime i hook up to theh dell via usb port the installation wizard comes up looking for software when its installed i doesnt find anything so i know the driver and put it in manually and still doesnt work

Which operating system does your Thinkpad use and does your Dell use the same one? For instance, there are some programs and devices which work well with Windows XP but do not work with Windows Vista.

yeah i tried that many times

In that case, I'm guessing you also already checked the manufacturer's website for your device for any updated drivers for the product.

hmmm...

Well, the problem isn't with your USB ports. If you had a problem there, the new device found window wouldn't come up.

I didn't mean Dell's drivers- I meant the drivers for your car analyzer. There may be updates to that driver on the company's website.

Also, is there an option for Plug and Play OS (or something similar) in your BIOS. If so make sure its turned on.
