Okies, once again let me go over the Drivers for the ATI cards, the M9 series.
Since the release of XFree 4.3.0 it has been much much confusion, and this is to sort them out. Please feel free to comment if it is still unclear:
There is 2 ways to get 3d Acceleration on your M9 under linux :
1) Using ATI proprietary drivers of the www.ati.com site. These will give you the BEST performance and run ut2k3 with no tweaks, but :
-ONLY XFree UP TO 4.2.X is supported ( these drivers cannot be installed on X 4.3.0 !, hope ATI will release some soon ! )
-These will max OUT your cpu ( CPU 100% usage ) everytime you run an accelerated graphical application. Therefore for long gamings sessions i had to throttle the CPU to at least 87 % even 75% to not get a system temperature reported to 76 Celcius after 2 hours. Refer to earlier post on how to install them.
2) Using the DRI Direct Rendering Infrastructure Radeon driver.
These will come standart with XFree86 4.3.0.
There is a lot of how to on how to install them. As well check the sager forums for prevoius posts.
Note that X 4.2.99 and 4.3.0 are supported. Not earlier versions. The performance is lost when maxing things like playing at full screen, but VERY acceptable if playing at 1024x768 Windowed. I get 60/80 100 peaks FPS at this level, full textures, full settings on Quake 3 Arena.
Hope that clears things. ASK ASK ASK, it is here for that
