M-6755 Start Up Issue

The last time I used my laptop I shut it down. After a day of sitting, I went to turn it on and the power button and wireless light flash at the same time and the screen won't ever turn on. I have tried removing the battery, closed/opened lid, and even let it try to start until the battery went dead. It just won't turn on all the sudden. I am running vista home premium. After reading horror stories of Gateways warranty service, I hate to send it to them, so hopefully there is some fix one of you know of. It is however within the 1 year factory warranty.

Thanks.

Welcome to NBF.

If it is still under warranty, your best bet is to send it in, regardless what horrors you have heard ;-)

Your laptop symptom sounds bad enough, to warrant a fiddling with it without opening it up. And that would automatically void your warranty.

sounds silly, but shake the unit gently. If you hear anything loose inside, the metal RFI shields around the thermal door may have come loose and they are shorting the mainboard. seems to happen often with this unit.

either way, it would need to be sent to gateway

I do hear those clips in there moving around. Is Gateway even honoring their warranties at this moment seeing that they filed Chapter 11 bankrupcy? I've heard that getting parts is nearly impossible for them seeing they owe everyone $.

sure, send it to gateway. as long as it is in warranty it can be repaired. boards for this unit are available. as for bankruptcy, that was MPC, gateway was bought by MPC. Then MPC went bankrupt, and sold Gateway to Acer.

Acer is not bankrupt.

Ok...So I got my m6755 back from Gateway (Actually Acer Repair Center). I must say that they repaired and returned it as they said. About 3 weeks with shipping time included.

Problem now is that I have NO sound what so ever. Speakers, Headphones, Nothing. Is there a driver I need to install for a sound card, or is it built into the motherboard? I'm not to familiar with this stuff, so please be gentle.

your OS? have you searched the section for M6755 drivers link suggestions?

OS is vista 32. I have not searched that section. I didn't know it was on here. i did go on gateways site and downloaded drivers there, with no luck. All part #'s listed with m6755 don't match what my repair reciept says. Reciept shows part # 4006229R. Gateway support shows part 1015515R. Is it possible that the wrong motherboard was put in and that is the cause?

I would give the chipset driver another (re)install and see. The site shows 2 drivers for audio, you tried both?

i would try that too. the sigmatel driver runs as a service, and sometimes that service does not start properly. uninstall the driver and reinstall may fix it. also, sounds silly but make sure it is not muted, and also make sure the speakers are set as the default sound device.

I am not sureif you resolve this issue already but if it was not a software problem the tech probably forgot to attact the wire from the speakers back to the motherboard. You can repair it yourself but then you might void the warranty . I guess the best way to verify if it is a software or hardware problem is to check in the device manager and see if the soundcard is listed without any errors. If it is listed and there is no problem then i would sway it is safe to assume that the wire was not conected. you might have to be without it for another 3 weeks ...hope this helps... Jb
