i am trying to remove some start - up programs in windows defender. some of them, will not let me hit any of the options: "Remove" "disable" and "able". it let me do it for some of the programs, but not all of them. i am using Vista.

Thanks.

Try using an alternative like cCleaner:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

using Tools->StartUp.

I recommend DISABLE instead of DELETE.

i have had heard bad things about this software. if you delete a wrong registry file, you might have to re-install windows. this actually happened to someone.

:-) cCleaner offers the best and secured way to disable and/or remove startup process entries out there. I have been using this tool since day 1, and would not recommend any apps that I do not use them myself.

But as with any involving-registry tools, a back up of the registry is always being recommended before making changes to it.

Again, whoever messed it up, propably was using the delete option without thinking, instead of using the disable function; the same thing that one would when using Windows Defender tool.

cheers ...

Dont use delete/remove, use "disable" as mentioned above. Even windows defender tool offers such option

A few ways:
. regedit then export the registry to a file, thus you have a copy of current registry saved.

. cCleaner offers the option of backing up the registry before cleaning.

Sorry, I dont use Norton apps, period.

Personally, I always used msconfig or just looking through the particular program's options to disable a program from starting up. I am aware that CCleaner can do the same thing, its just I don't use that feature of CCleaner.
