need help with a dell 9300 with all my files, but no working screen

Thread Starter
Hey everyone,

I haven't visited in a long time, not since getting my 9300 a few years back. Since then, the screen has crapped out and is blank. I get nothing. I have acquired an ibook G4 and an external monitor recently. I need help with these options to be able to either connect the external monitor or be able to transfer files:

1. Connect the external monitor to the dell 9300 with the vga connector. i tried that. i am using an external keyboard for the dell since the dell's keyboard crapped out too. the external has no 'fn' key, but i read i can use 'scroll lock + f8' to switch to the external monitor. doesn't work. any suggestions on how to switch monitors without being able to see the dell's screen?

2. Firewire. If I cannot get the monitor to work, then I want to try this. I am new to firewire, but i read it is possible to transfer files from the pc to the mac. Is it possible to transfer files though if one screen is blank? Could I see the dell's output on the mac screen somehow.

3. Bluetooth. If I can use bluetooth to transfer files, fine. I have tried to enable bluetooth using scroll lock + f2, but nothing happens. also, i do not remember buying the bluetooth option when i got the dell.

4. Whatever you recommend.

I am in a freakin bind here. I have all my music and important school files on the dell. I really need those, and i would love to be able to hook up an external monitor. Also, the external monitor i am trying to hook up is an old HP, but I could hook up the ibook G4 no problem. So that should not be a problem. I am really bummed out. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Question: Why can't you use the built-in Fn keys on the 9300 itself?

EDIT: Never mind. I see your explanation.

A couple of possible avenues come to mind:

1) try to get the external monitor method to work--this could involve trying to get the built-in keyboard to work.

2) take out the 9300's drive and put it in a USB enclosure. Then mount it to your new laptop to copy files over.

Actually, Galahad's USB enclosure idea might be best. However, you might have some issues with that older Mac being able to read NTFS volumes.

What you could try is popping off the Hinge cover on your 9300 then disconnecting the LCD cable from the board. with the LCD disconnected the system should default to an external display.

That's pretty interesting, Miss Evil. I never knew that trick. Learn something new every day.

Later, ma'am.

I would go with the external enclosure idea. If the Mac has trouble reading NTFS, then I'd use a Linux Live CD that supports NTFS reading and copy the files that way.

It's what I did when my hard drive went out on me, just before some asshole stole it.
