M-6332 Not Recognizing my USB Memory Card Reader

Hi guys,

New to the forum, and did a search on my model# with no results.

I bought a reconditioned red M-6332 notebook from Overstock.com for Christmas, and am having an issue. The first time I fired it up, I plugged in my UBS card reader, and was able to access my photos on a memory card.

However, ever since that 1st time, when I plug the reader in, it just makes a sound like it know the reader is there, but it doesn't show up anywhere that I can access it. It did show up in the "Computer" area along with all the other drives, but no more.

I'm aware there's a built-in 5-in-1 card reader on this machine, but I'll need an adapter for my memory cards (Memory Stick Pro Duo). I just need to know why my computer appears not to recognize my USB reader, when it once did (and, what I can do about it).

Thanks all, for any insight.

Cheers!

Have you tried with another card reader? And be careful with the memory stick pro duo card, I had to get one quite specific for this card (not the muliti type) in order to access the card from my Sony DSC-H50

cheers ...

Thanks.

I don't have another reader right now, but I know the reader in question does work with my Pro Duo card on my old HP laptop. And, as I said, the first time it tried it on the Gateway, it worked fine. Ever since then - nada. I'm stumped.

How about giving uninstall and reinstall the USB controller in device manager a try?

I think I will.... Haven't checked to see if any other USB devices work on the machine, either. Will report back!

if you plug it in and hear the usb insert sound then the device should be recognized. Check the device manager to see if it has issues with the drivers, or look for any devices with an exclamation point on it.

If everything is good there, right click on "computer", then go to manage, then go to disk management on the left. If the drive shows, it could be just a mapping issue. This is common if you map a network drive to the same letter as the card reader.

I didn't mention my machine has Windows Vista Home Premium - would the location of the controller be different? Also, what exactly would I be looking for?

Thanks.

No, controller definition is under device manager option, on both Vista and XP.

cheers ...
