well, the big keynote is done....

have to say its disappointing really. while i am happy for the DRM free itunes and for the new 17 inch macbook pro they really did i think drop the ball with no new mac mini, no imac update, no iphone nano (even though i think the idea is dumb), no new displays....

not really impressed with it all

Things to take away from this...

17" MBP, no GOOD surprise there. Non-replaceable battery, really BAD surprise. "Lets take one of our worst features from other devices and put it in our flagship laptop"

DRM free iTunes. Eh should have happened some time ago at this scale. I have avoided buying anything from iTunes specifically for the reason of DRM. The tiered pricing is going to kinda suck most likely, but I will wait and see.

iLife - Who cares? Really. I don't touch Garageband much, iMovie might be a decent update if they put BACK in the timeline that was in iMovie '06 and they removed in the previous version. iDVD, I didn't even see anything about, so some new themes I would guess. iPhoto, didn't answer my big question, will the thing still choke on basic photo management of my library. Cause the current version slows to a crawl on it, and I don't touch it unless I can't avoid it. I need to just build RawStudio I think for OS X and use that.

No Mac Mini update - BOO. Ideally I would have been happy with the ability to order a Mini with Mac OS X server to use for a home server. Doubt it would happen. Also ideally the rumors about a dual head nVidia 9400 based mini would be true, but that is even more doubtful it would happen. But if it did I would be jumping on it in a heartbeat.

Nothing at all on Snow Leopard. I was looking forward to some information on this and possibly a projected release date as it is obvious they aren't making their one from when they first announced it.

At this point, between recent conferences that Apple has done, I think there is a good reason they are leaving the scene. They haven't wowed anyone at a conference in some time now and it isn't worth it for them to show up and put on a big show for mediocore showings. Its a shame, but I haven't been impressed by Apple in a couple of years now at these so probably is for the best.

Not saying they aren't still a good buy, just venting dissapointment.

I don't like the non-removable battery part but I think about it: how often do you swap out batteries? My laptop is almost always connected to the mains and as it is a 17 I don't travel with it often. It makes much more sense for a removable battery in the 15 but people with 17s probably don't need a removable battery anywhere near as much.

As far as iLife goes; iPhoto has some sweet new features. Love the facial recognition and the geotagging. Also integration with Google Maps. The fact that you can add that to books and slide shows makes it even easier to keep track of where you've been when you're on holiday. Also the same features in iMovie plus the addition of themes makes creating movies a much more interesting experience. I just wish I did video to take advantage of the new features. I'm not interested in Garageband or iWeb but just iPhoto and iMovie make iLife 09 more than worth it.

The Mac Mini will probably be updated at a special event sometime within the next couple weeks. Same with Snow Leopard; there will probably be a special event announcing it though it's possible they'll hold it until the developers conference.

I think Apple is leaving Macworld because it's cheaper and easier for them to make smaller announcements throughout the year than to hold everything for one big announcement. And why do they have to wow us everytime they announce something?

Depends a lot on who you are. Especially when doing work on the road it becomes more popular, but also for instance, the battery on my 15" MBP is already getting weak after about a year and a half, I need to replace it soon. This wasn't even a computer I took on tour, just going back and forth between home, work, and contracts, and appropriate travel.

iPhoto, unless they have fixed its ability to choke on even decently large photo collections, all the new features are worthless. My photo collection isn't even that large, a few thousand, but iPhoto slows to a crawl walking them.

iMovie is unfortunately them adding BACK in features that never should have been removed to begin with to be honest.

That is an assumption. I doubt in particular we will hear much about Snow Leopard at this point until the Dev conference, or at the very least after another few versions of Dev seeds as last I heard it was not to close to being production ready. Since no update was given here I don't expect to hear about it to soon.

Mac Mini updates, I think it will be at least a month, probably more before we hear about another round of hardware updates of any sort after this.

My point is that it doesn't make sense for them to continue being at the conferences. Part of giving the keynote would be that people want to watch and/or learn something special. The keynote is supposed to be the central part of a conference, thus the name 'key'note.

They don't need to give the keynote every time, and in my opinion it is pointless to give a keynote unless you have something big to talk about. So when you DO give a keynote, make certain you have something to talk about worthwhile.

I think it was a very good idea for them to leave the conferences because they have not lived up to this expectation in a while to be honest. It doesn't help them to continue doing that, and costs them a lot of money to put on these events.

By the way, one of the primary audiences for a 17" MBP will be the on the road power user, exactly the audience that may need multiple batteries.

my last 17 inch machine... the m1710 i was a bit nuts on the battery power since my university had limited options to plug it in while in some buildings. i actually had 5 batteries and made use of having them too. for people in that realm the longer battery life may be the one good side, most people dont go for a 6+ hour stint away from any power source.

still i would have preffered a removable battery myself but thats me wanting to have an option not tied solely to apple
