Temp/fan speed issue on m1710 with Win7 beta

Installed the win7 beta on my m1710 yesterday, and after a quick trip to windows update for some drivers, everything worked great with one exception.

Thier is a setting in power management for the processor to throtle the cpu before turning up the fan speed that is enable by default when on battery.

Maybe it was just a fluke with my unit, but when I unplugged it to move to the living room, it got hot, really, really, hot. Way hotter than I've ever felt it get with XP or Vista. As far as I could tell, the fan's weren't spinning at all.

I changed the setting to ramp the fans vs throtle the cpu, rebooted, and it's back to normal.

Again, it might have been a fluke with my m1710, but if your installing win7 on a laptop, you might want to change this setitng before running on battery.

thanks for the heads up. Sounds like something in your ACPI wasn't being recognized correctly or might need proprietary drivers.

That Windows 7 is a festing pile of DOGPOO. I installed it on a Asus Maximus Extreme and have had nothing but serious problems. I switched back to Vista and the machine runs fine. THat 7 is all hype and some people here are being very misleading about it. I dont see how its better in one single way.

That's why it's in Beta Testing - it works differently in different systems. Windows 7 runs very well on my Asus Z71V notebook so far.

I can't use my m1710 as a laptop anymore anyway, battery only lasts 6 minutes (According to power manager). Its barely enough to move the laptop to my tv which is located directly behind me... So I run it as a permanent desktop now, no need to worry about overheating issues, i8kfan gui runs to the max 100% of the time.

Other than that one odd issue with the fans not spinning up to manage heat, I've had nothing but success with Win7.

I did install the latest sound driver off Dell's site to get the subwoofer working again, but other than that the drivers from the install or windows update have worked fine.
