Notebook doesn't POST

Hey guys, I had to replace the DC jack in my Inspiron 9300 and it appears to work correctly. Plug a battery in and it charges just fine. However when I turn the computer on it does not POST (or beep in any way at all). I turn on the power, the fans spin up, the HDD spins up, and then about 5 seconds later it all just shuts down. Ive tried taking the HDD and the RAM out to try and get some sort of beep code and i get nothing.

Im completely stuck, does anyone have any idea what the problem may be?

Really appreciate any help guys

if the new power connector wasn't installed correctly, your computer could just be out of power. You might want to double check that the new jack is in correctly. It's hard to tell how much the battery is charging without being able to boot the computer- it may be a fraction of a watt per minute.

Hey thanks for the quick reply!

One of my batteries was completely dead and i stuck it in the computer to check its charge level. After around an hour the battery is 4/5 charged so i do believe the power connector is working properly. The problem appears to be elsewhere in the hardware

Hey guys i wanted to let you know i wasn't correct in my earlier post. The fans are NOT spinning. ONLY the HDD is making noise when the power button is pressed. I tried starting the laptop with it disassembled outside of the case in case the issue was a grounding contact or something. No go.
Appreciate any ideas

huh.. well, you said you checked memory, hard drive, and checked that the battery is charging correctly which would indicate the power system is working. Is the CPU locked in? At this point, it's either going to be something really obvious that got overlooked or something very serious. It's sounding more like you've got a motherboard issue.

I'd check what Dj suggested, even professionals like myself forget to engage the cam lock on the CPU socket when putting a system back together. And considering the number of times I've embarassingly forgotten that critical step that definitely sounds like what your problem may be.

Thanks for the ideas guys!

The CPU is held in by a screw, not a socket. When i took the board out i never even bothered taking the CPU out of the motherboard. I doubt that's the problem

Is the notebook able to boot on battery? I'm assuming no but it hasn't been asked.

No, it's still in a socket just like a desktop PGA processor would be. The screw is actually just a cam to lock the CPU into place. On desktops they have room for that little lever.

However, if you didn't remove the CPU to begin with the only other thing I can think of is that you May have gotten some neighboring component too hot near the DC Jack. or an electro-static discharge from your iron zapped something. Did the laptop boot before you disassembled it?
