CACHE vs FSB vs CLOCK SPEED vs # OF CORES

Thread Starter
hi guys!I have plans of buying a new intel processor, specifically core 2 duo E8500 or core 2 quad Q8200...now I have 3 problems:

I.Could anybody help figure out which one should I buy? should I go for the:

1. quad core with 4mb cache, clock speed 2.33ghz,fsb 1333mhz?

or

2.core 2 duo with 6mb cache,clock speed 3.16ghz,fsb 1333mhz?

another thing,
II.which one should i look after?(i'm a gamer)

A) higher cache, lower fsb, lower clock speed

B) lower cache,higher fsb,lower clock speed

c)lower cache, lower fsb, higher clock speed

III. which one is better without considering the price?

a)4gb ddr2-800 ram or
b)2gb ddr3-1066 ram?

Personally, I'd go with the Core 2 Duo but really the performance difference is based on how well the game is programmed. I haven't been paying attention to the gaming scene recently but my guess is that more games use 2 cores intelligently than 4 cores thoroughly.

Also, 2 GB of RAM is probably not enough anymore for a Windows gamer.

I. I second zzpulp - the higher clock speed will be more useful for non-quad optimized games (and there are a lot of non-quad-optimized games)

II. clock speed over the others if you have to make the decision

III. more RAM is much better than faster RAM

The main difference between DDR2 and DDR3 in notebooks is efficiency and how it will affect battery life. Not a huge difference but the performance difference isn't really significant either. You can always upgrade RAM but DDR3 will cost a lot more to upgrade.

Windows Vista really likes at least 3 to 4GB of RAM to really shine. Windows XP will run just fine on 2GB even with modern games.

Based on the extreme difference in speeds of the two CPUs you are mentioning I'm assuming you are comparing the desktop E8500 Core 2 Duo to the mobile Quad core. So I'm assuming you are comparing a Clevo based D900 notebook such as the Sager NP9262 (with an E8500 and 4GB DDR2-800) to another notebook equipped with the 2.33GHz Quad core and 2GB of DDR3-1066? If so there are a lot of other considerations such as the type of graphics card. If you are seriously considering it the Sager NP9262 has the option for a relatively inexpensive Quad Core Q9650 at 3.0GHz (for only $150 more) with 12MB L2 cache which I would highly recommend and basically it will blow the doors off any other notebook you can buy right now.
