CD Driver Not Working

When I insert my CDs into my CD drvie, it does not read them. I tried 2 different ones, and neither works! I am using Vista.

Try to find some kind of bootable CD online and burn it with another drive. Then, see if your drive can boot the CD from the BIOS (F12 when the system is turning on). There are simpler tests but this is the one I would do if I thought it was Operating system/driver related.

I will be back on later if you need me to elaborate.

If you have the Dell resource DVD, you can press F12 at the POST screen and attempt to boot from this disc. You can also hold down the Fn key while powering up the laptop to put the system in diagnostic mode. It'll take several minutes before you can get to an optical drive test, but you should be able to get to it via either method.

what is the resource dvd? and could i just post on here a "diagnostic report" from Norton 360? would that help?
i have also tried re-booting up my computer, and holding down "Fn", but nothing happens.

He said to press FN+On at the same time.

ok, i did that, ran the tests, and it still does not work. :/
post #7 of 26
Did the tests tell you that there is a problem with the optical drive?

A diagnostic test is designed to TELL US WHAT"S WRONG, not fix the problem.

First of all, there was nothing wrong. No problems
I talked to someone at Dell recently over the phone, and they told me that I could try inserting the software CD. I was not sure what CD they were talking about. I tried the Dell MediaDirect one, but that did nothing. It wouldn't work anyway since the CD drive is not reading anything, and is possible not even being detected by the computer! But I ran that Diagnostic Report, and it said that there is nothing wrong... so what does all of this mean?

Did you take the system to the diagnostic partition (assuming it hasn't been erased) and run the Optical Drive confidence test?

If the drive is being detected at all it should show up in the BIOS. Press F2 on the Dell logo screen and under system information it should tell you weather or not the drive is detected.

ok, so so far I have tried the F2 thing, and found the following that applies to what we are talking to:
System>Device Info>Fixed Bay Device: DVD+/-RW. Does this mean that it is detecting it?

I get an error message saying (about the device):
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."

BIOS detects your drive, so that at least means that the drive is receiving commands from the system. Sounds to me though that your problem is more related to Windows than it is a mechanical or electrical problem with the drive.

Go into device manager and uninstall your IDE/ATAPI controllers and reboot, they may correct themselves.

tried that; doesn't work. i think i need to re-install the driver's software? it said there are no solutions. i am getting error Code 30. It is telling me that "The driver may be corrupted or missing."

Your IDE/ATAPI drivers may have been altered by some manner of burning software on your PC. Unless there's a specific fix out there for the software you have been/are using you'll probably need to do a repair. Are you using Vista or XP?

vista. i did run a CCleaner scan. could that have messed it up? i also have spy-bot, and Norton, but I am pretty sure that those did not mess it up because i've done scans with them many times, and it has been fine.
CCleaner is a good utility to use, but if you have it mess with the registry there is always a chance of it messing something up. If you have system restore turned on, I suggest you revert to a point before you ran CCleaner.

This is certainly a software problem. Why didn't you list this error code earlier? Anyway, google can be your friend. There are various approaches here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/For...-125c6eb9441d/ . None of them are guaranteed to work but obviously they're worth a try.

I remember having this problem on an older dell and it was the lower and upper filters problem. However, this may not be your case as this issue was related to certain software. Think of any programs that you recently uninstalled.

could i download and use Recuva? would that help to do a system restore?
Recuva only tries to recover deleted files. It is free, but the downfall is that it will try to recover files, not folder structures like with other commercial file recovery.

So no, it cannot be substituted with Windows System Restore. They both are 2 completely different processes.

cheers ...
