So neone plunged the well reviewed win7 public beta onto their AW lappy?
Any comments?

I have it running on my 12 inch Sentia 3200. Seems much lighter than Vista and runs very well. It's got some great new features. I have 1 gig of ram and it only uses 40%...

I think Microsoft may be onto a winner here. I think all Vista Owners should get a free upgrade but thats probably unlikely. Maybe AW will/should offer this down the road...

I'm running the 7000 version...

I installed it on my m9700 and couldn't get sound to work. So much for driver compatability with Vista. Everything else seemed to work but with no sound I wiped it and put Vista back.

I'm dual booting xp and the 7000 build of windows 7. I have the same problem xxEIEIOxx has in that there is no support for our audio on the m9700.

I'll continue to use both and let all the m9700 owners know if I find a solution to the audio problem.

I hope someone finds a solution or I'll be staying with Vista on this thing. I spent about 3 hours trying to get sound to work before giving up on it. I doubt we'll be getting any official drivers from Alienware since this unit is no longer in production.
Given that this is a beta version we will not see any drivers from alienware for a while on all accounts I think. I'm certain however that there will be a work around for the audio controller driver in our m9700's.

Besides the sound issues, what does everybody think of the actual OS?
I have it installed on test machines at work and so far it looks promising, but the more I use it the more obvious it becomes that it is beta. I think it shows a lot of potential. The new taskbar was interesting at first, but after some useage I don't know that I like it as much as I thought I would. IE8 in Win 7 looks good at this point and seems very fast.

Going from XP home edition to the 64bit version of 7 beta is nice in nearly all the aspects. I found windows 7 to be more user friendly from the get go then what vista was when I set my girlfriends laptop up for her.

For a beta version of an OS it is very solid.

On a side note, sorta cross thread posting here, but did the 9700 come with any propritary AW software other than rebranded stuff, like say CommandCenter, and does it work in non-aw branded OS like Win7 or other?

The m9700? Nope, nothing propriatary, just the usual stuff. Everything works but the sound, which appears to install properly but just doesn't work.

I have a m51-5500 Single core 2 gig of ram. I am very impressed how fast this works on my system. I have not been able to get sound and wireless working. My ati card installs drivers but doesn't let me change resolutions. Intel video works great!!(I have the stupid switch on the from of mine) Anyone else have luck with the Wireless I am interested. I got the vista drivers from intel's website but that didn't work.

I had some trouble with the wireless drivers also (I've got the Intel 2915 wireless card). The trick to getting the drivers to work is not to install them the normal way. Instead, once you've extracted the 12.2.2.0_Gen_SW folder, then go into Device Manager, find your wireless card (it should be the unknown wireless device under network adapters), right-click it, and choose "update driver software". Then select "browse my computer for driver software" and select the FV 12.2.0.0_Gen_SW_155293 folder (found by opening the aforementioned 12.2.2.0_Gen_SW folder). Make sure you've got the "search subfolders" option checked and hit "okay". That will install the driver Windows 7 needs.

Anyone try it on an M15x yet???

On my m9700, I can't get the video drivers to change the resolution... anyone had any luck? I have the NVIDIA 7900 GS 256MB. I can't change resolution from 640x480 with the NVIDIA driver that comes from Windows Update....

Thoughts?

Try a different driver. You can check on Laptop Video 2 Go for the best ones.

I'm running win7 32bit on my m15x. All that I had to install were the AW official Nvidia Vista Drivers, wireless, LAN, and Bluetooth. Everything else was automatic. Running very smoothly so far.

Djembe,

I have tried a various number of drivers and all seem to have the same issue. I can't change the experience at all in the UI. I don't know if I should go back farther....

Anyone got any ideas for m9700 with the 7900GS with Win 7?

I would just love to hear from one person who has it successfully installed with a resolution better than 640x480 using a NVIDIA driver (not the SVGA driver).

Did you try using a modded Vista nvidia driver from www.laptopvideo2go.com? It should work.

They should work, I had no problem with video. You could try the latest Vista drivers from nvidia's site. Those should work also.
