Windows 7 on AW yet? - Page 2

So, can you post a specific driver you got off of Laptop Video 2 go? I've tried both the Laptop Video 2 go & the latest Vista drivers and no luck. I've even cleaned the computer now... so there's NO other software installed at the moment. When I say "cleaned" I did a fresh install, uninstalled the driver that came with windows update and then ran drivercleaner.net. So, the last one I tried from LaptopVideo2go was 185.20. Doesn't recognize the monitor at all (same with all the NVIDIA drivers as far as I can tell). "Unknown Monitor" and then only supports 640x480. 185.20 doesn't even have the NVIDIA Control Panel.

I looked for one that was posted by the manufacturer of my notebook (Asus) where my video card was listed. In my case, that's the 174.31 Vista driver, which works fine for me. If you can find a driver posted by Alienware (or Clevo or Arima, depending on which ODM made your notebook) on LV2G that lists your graphics card in the "originally supports" section, I'd try it. That should give you the best chance of compatibility.

I would also check the windows update site as you may have to try and install it again.

If the specs in your sig are the machine you are trying to get working, it is very similar to mine, except it looks like you have SLI and I have one card. Maybe you could disable the second card and see if that works, as again I have not had any problems. As far as the "Unknown Monitor", that is normal. The only issues I had with my m9700 was sound, and I have found drivers that I may try in the next couple of days for that.

Anyone got any ideas for m9700 with the 7900GS with Win 7?

I would just love to hear from one person who has it successfully installed with a resolution better than 640x480 using a NVIDIA driver (not the SVGA driver).
I had the same problem until I updated my BIOS to 3.18...

BTW that was on 32 and 64-bit versions.

xxEIEIOxx & DHAJ,

You've had the best comments yet. Ok, so DHAJ, that has the sound of special sauce to me. A BIOS upgrade (which I haven't done) might help.

xxEIEIOxx, Actually I've been having problems with drivers under Vista too so I removed the other card physically quite a while ago.... I need to change my signature. So, it's no longer SLI at all.... just one 7900GS.

DHAJ, I tried 32 bit UPGRADE first and then decided that with the problem I was seeing I should just wipe it and install the 64 bit version of the beta. I will try the BIOS upgrade and then either try just reinstalling drivers or even another fresh install....

By the way, what driver did you install? Just the "Windows Update" driver or a specialized driver? Thanks for your help for sure!

Odd that you have trouble under Vista as well. I have been running Vista for about a year with no issues. My 7900 GS is 512 MB and I think you stated yours was 256, but that should still be enough it shouldn't be an issue. I haven't upgraded my BIOS, though I think I got one of the last m9700's made (it disappeared from their website a week after I got mine.) Maybe I have the latest. You cold try the 64 bit beta, but I expect you will have other devices that won't work. But at least you would know if the video problem went away.

The issues I was having with Vista were with particular games and also with WDDM. I had issues with various Laptop Video 2 Go drivers just completely hanging after about 3 minutes.

BTW, I am running the 64-bit. Anyhow, let me do the BIOS update and post my results. At least if it works we'll have some guidance for any other m9700 folks who run into similar issues.

I googled for the 64-bit drivers and found some guy on www.vistax64.com saying he finally got a package to work. PM'd him and downloaded those and they worked. I'm in the process of uploading them to my web server (having asked permission, of course), so PM me for the details.

SLI failed to enable the first time I clicked it, but the second try got it. After that I installed CS:S, started it up and it flickered worse than a 20-year old TV. Disabled SLI for CS:S and it worked. Video Stress test got like 81fps with the single card. I haven't had time to tweak on it or try any other games. Left 4 Dead got done downloading right before I had to quit, though...

I read a couple things about people having audio issues. I didn't have a single problem getting that to work with those 64-bit drivers. The webcam isn't working, though. And neither is the modem. But who uses a modem?

DHAJ, SUCCESS. So, it's all in the BIOS update. Use the 3.18. It booted into 1920x1200 by default after the BIOS update. I haven't tried anything else. I am running the Windows Update WDDM 1.0 drivers. I'm going to go check out the audio now.

DHAJ, How did you get sound working? What 64-bit drivers are you talking about? Where are they available.

Good to hear the BIOS update fixed it. Mine must have come with that version as I never had the problem.

As for the sound, you may want to go to http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx and search for soundmax and look at the results for Windows 7 client. I haven't tried it yet but have seen it suggested. Let us know if it works. If not I'll try it myself over the weekend.

Check your PMs.

I didn't try the video drivers from Windows update. I always thought nVidia might know more about their cards than Microsoft...

The Windows Update drivers are from NVIDIA....

Still trying to see if I can figure out the sound driver issue.

If I would've read this first, I wouldn't have made that silly comment. Guess I'm still thinking about the 175 drivers Windows Update keeps trying to put on my WinXP machine that's running the 180's...

I'm liking Windows 7 more and more...Definitely MUCH lighter than Vista. I'm guessing MS realized that they are losing out on the "Netbook" market and I'm guessing that this version of Windows will be aimed at that market as well as folks that are suffering on "Low-End" machines running Vista.
Yeah, haven't used Vista in a couple of days I really love Win7 too.
works perfectly on the m7700 with RAID 0.
Found all the drivers itself, with the exception of the Realtek onboard audio.
You can just use the Vista driver available on Realteks site to get that working.

If someone needs drivers go to alienwares website and download the vista drivers... Windows 7 is the same thing as Vista Ultimate...This is where I found all my drivers...but windows 7 is still not good for gaming... I am bought a 1000 points short on my 3dmark06 score... im working on the others to see what I get...

You would think that games runs smoother, since Win7 runs a lot better. Go figure...Nvidia needs to get to work!
