HP DV6000 battery will not charge

I recently travelled with my HP dv6238ea laptop and 2 batteries in the top box of my car. The journey was several hours and it was freezing temperatures. When I went to use my laptop both batteries no longer had any charge. Since then, I have been able to use the laptop while plugged in but the batteries will retain no power at all.

Is this due to the cold weather they were subject to and is there anything I can do to resolve the situation apart from buying a new battery.
