" HDD ERROR " after boot-up

Thread Starter
A friend of mine just gave me his old Toshiba Satellite 335CDS Laptop and when I boot up it says " HDD ERROR " , please insert system disk and press any key. I put in the Win98 boot up disk to try and to FDISK and it tells me that no drive present and save thing when I try to format it. At the Bios/Cmos screen, under I/O it says " HDD - NO Drive " , but Floppy is detected and also the cd-rom drive!

Does this mena My hard drive is dead?
The jumper setting is correct!

Please help me if you can!! Thank you!

Yes, it means your drive is dead (or the connection to it is bad).
