Laptop shuts down after first screen (Sony VAIO VGN-TX1HP)

Yeah my friend (Who I kind of owe) asked me to see what's wrong with his laptop. it comes up with this screen.

It goes to this screen then stays powered on but the screen goes blank. I am currently googling the problem and so far I have found nothing on this. Help please?

EDIT: So far I can go into the bios but there is not that many options.

Can you boot with a Linux LiveCD or Windows recovery disc? The hard drive might be shot. You also might want to try taking out each memory module in turn and/or running memtest86 (if it boots) to see if faulty memory could be the issue.

I put a linux livecd and put "Optical Drive" first in the list of boot devices. Nothing changed.

In my opinion I think it's a bootloader problem.

If it's a boot loader, it's a motherboard issue and you're not going to be able to do anything about it aside from replace the motherboard. I'd check other things first if you can. Did you try checking memory?

I don't think I can run memtest86. It won't run any CDs.

I'll check the RAM later.
