Upgrading Video on Dell Inspiron 6000

Thread Starter
Hello everyone,

I recently upgraded my processor from a Celeron 370 to a Pentium M 740 and upgraded my harddrive to 60 Gigs at 5,200 rpm. I now wish to upgrade my 6000's video performance for some limited gaming. My current motherboard has integrated video. Are there external video cards?

Thanks in advance...

Any video upgrade you could theoretically do would not be cost effective on a system that old. The best you're going to do with your system is a Radeon X300, and not only will you have to change the motherboard, but I beleive you'll also have to change the memory as well.

You'd be better off saving your money and use this laptop until you can't stands no more.

MrEvil is correct, you have a greatly diminishing rate of return in upgrading your system. None of the currently available external video solutions offer much in the way of performance and are pricey. They are mostly designed to add extra monitors to an existing system, not improve performance. Any external video solution is greatly limited by the bandwidth of either your usb or firewire ports, neither of which come close to the performance level of an AGP or PCIE port.

About the best you can do in order to optimize your system you've already done. RAM is pretty cheap these days, so max it out to 2 gigs if you haven't already. Then just use it and enjoy! Save your money for a newer system with discrete graphics if you want to game, or better yet since fewer and fewer titles are available for the PC, invest in a good quality console as this appears to be the direction the industry is heading. Just my 2 cents.

I hope this helps,
Ciao
