What are the differences between 7700 rev. 5.3 and 6.1 motherboards?

I'm going to pick up a new motherboard for my old (crappy) 7700, and can't figure out the difference between the two other than one will cost more:

They're both Intel, and both support the same GPU models. Is there any reason I shouldn't save the $100 and get the older version?

They don't support the same gpu models. The earlier revisions don't supply enough power to the vid card slot for the later cards. The info on the web listing for the mobo seems to be a template and is not accurate.

I'm not sure of the revisions, but the original mobo only supported the 6800go. The second revision added power to the slot for the 6800 ultra, and I think it also works with the 7800gtx. The later revision was for the 7900gtx and 7950gtx.

Someone at ztronics should be able to help you out with which revision is appropriate for the gpu you have, or want to buy.

The site states that both work with all Nvidia from 6800 to 7950 GTX. Hence why I'm asking here: if they're wrong, then they're hardly the ones to ask.

One is new and one is a pull from another machine. I think anything after 5.2 is compatable up to a 7950GTX. 5.1 was the first.

Oh.... Then I'm probably wrong... I thought 5.2 was the first rev.

The 5.3 motherboard will support all of the video cards. From the 6800 ultra to the 7950GTX, the 6.1 and the 6.2n motherboards were released because of the audio driver conflict. If you use the latest audio drivers from realtek you could run into problems with sound on the 5.3 board. Basicly, save your self money and get the 5.3 board and just used the audio drivers from Alienwares web site and you will have no problems.

Just bear in mind that if your original system has/had the first 6800go then you might have to purchase a new power supply. If you have the 6800 Ultra, you should be fine.

That is correct, the origional power supply probably was a 20v 9Amp output, the powersupply for the 5.3 and up motherboards is a 20v 11Amp outout.

Thanks for the info, it really helps me a lot! Especially if it saves me the $180 difference I might have paid for the 6.1. So 5.3 it is, and that will leave me change to spare for some other hardware I desperately need. Thanks again.
