Greetings everyone. Thanks in advance for any help:
I recently acquired an older VAIO (PCG-Z1WAMP) and am trying to figure out a solution to one last problem. As it stands right now, the laptop battery is not charging and/or can not hold a charge. When you pull the adapter out, the power cuts out. The system can properly identify when the battery is disconnected/connected during operation by both the operating system (running Linux, Ubuntu 8.10) and the Mobo via the battery LED. The OS indicates that the battery is "charging" at 100% of which the status never changes. The thing that I am wondering about is the battery LED. When the battery is in with the AC adapter, the orange LED is rapidly blinking at about 2 times per second. If you remove the battery, it stops and when you put it back in, it takes about 20 seconds before the light comes back. I left it overnight and the light never changes to another pattern. It remains the same so long as the current battery is in.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a straight answer as to what that means exactly. Some people have suggested that it means the system is trying to charge the battery while others have said that it is a 'battery error' sign of which I am convinced. Naturally, my first instinct is to just obtain a new battery seeing as I am at least the 3rd receipant, possibly the 4th. The battery it has now is an aftermarket battery and is not the original. I have read that there was a reported problem with some VAIO notebooks concerning the battery charging components. I just wanted to see if anyone here had encountered the same problem and have successfully remedied the problem with a new battery.
Honestly, I would rather not spend any money unless I know I will be able to use it as a mobile machine. I have the feeling that many of you will simply say "just try another battery" which I may just bite the bullet and try, but I would like to see if I can get some reassurance that it will work first.
Again, thanks in advance for any input.
